As we mark World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, we celebrate the profound impact that engineering has on shaping our world for the better. This day serves as a reminder of the crucial role that engineers play in driving innovation, solving complex challenges, and building a more sustainable future for generations to come. Engineering is not merely about constructing buildings, bridges, and roads; it is about transforming ideas into reality, harnessing the power of technology, and finding creative solutions to the most pressing global issues. Engineers are at the forefront of designing and implementing solutions that address the world's most urgent needs. At its core, engineering is about problem-solving and collaboration. It requires a diverse range of skills, from critical thinking and creativity to technical expertise and teamwork. Engineers work across disciplines, drawing on knowledge from science, mathematics, and technology to develop innovative solutions that improve people's lives and protect the planet. As we face unprecedented challenges such as climate change, urbanization, and resource depletion, the role of engineers becomes increasingly vital. They are instrumental in developing sustainable technologies, designing resilient infrastructure, and implementing strategies to mitigate environmental impact. World Engineering Day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contributions of engineers worldwide. It is a day to honor their dedication, ingenuity, and commitment to creating a better world for all. It is also a call to action, urging us to invest in engineering education, promote diversity and inclusion in the field, and support policies that prioritize sustainability and innovation. As we look to the future, let us harness the power of engineering to address the world's most pressing challenges and build a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable world for generations to come. Together, we can empower engineers to drive positive change and create a brighter future for all. Happy World Engineering Day to all the engineers who are shaping the world with their passion, expertise, and dedication. Let us continue to work together to build a better tomorrow. #WorldEngineeringDay #SustainableDevelopment #Innovation #Engineering #FutureOfWork #STEM #GlobalChallenges #Sustainability #Infrastructure #RenewableEnergy #SmartCities #Resilience #Collaboration

On this day, February 5th, 1989, a significant milestone in the history of broadcasting unfolded as Sky launched five pioneering channels, including Sky One and Sky News. This bold move not only expanded the horizons of television viewing but also marked the inception of a new era in news dissemination and entertainment. The launch was a game-changer, redefining the landscape of broadcast media with its innovative approach to content delivery and channel variety. Love it or hate it, there’s no denying the profound impact it had on the broadcasting industry. It challenged the norms, set new standards, and paved the way for future advancements. As one of the person who had the privilege of being a part of this groundbreaking journey helping to launch 🚀 Sky News, I look back with pride and a bit of nostalgia at the role we all played in shaping the future of television. The launch of Sky’s initial channels was not just about bringing new content to viewers; it was about creating a vision for the future of media. Reflecting on those times, I am reminded of the challenges, the excitement, and the relentless pursuit of excellence that defined our mission. It was a period of intense innovation and growth, one that has left a lasting legacy on how content is created, distributed, and consumed. It was an honor to be part of a team that not only witnessed but contributed to a pivotal chapter in broadcasting history over 35 years ago. https://lnkd.in/dA4MbN59 #BroadcastingHistory #SkyLaunch #InnovationInMedia #OnThisDay

There is much to be hopeful for in the UK theatre industry's sustainability progress in recent years, and I applaud those behind initiatives like The Theatre Green Book. However, as things stand, I'm a little more sceptical than some about our ability to reach net zero by 2030. If it IS going to happen, we’re going to need to make some big choices. 𝟭. 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 '𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲' 🌍: Achieving net zero will require a c.80-90% reduction in emissions across society, and this won't come from easy wins alone. The theatre industry must be prepared to make radical changes. We need to rethink what theatre will look like in the 21st century and be willing for this to be very different to what it is today. 𝟮. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 🌱: For those emissions that are truly unavoidable, we need robust support for carbon offsets through high-quality and durable removal projects. Currently, there are structural barriers that disincentivise this—for example, ACE project grants explicitly exclude the use of funds for offsetting. 𝟯. 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 🤝: Much of the theatre industry's impact is through Scope 3 emissions – ie, they’re beyond our *direct* control. We need to foster greater collaboration with other industries to address these emissions collectively, and not just see them as someone else’s problem. 𝟰. 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 🗣️: Engaging with audiences on sustainability practices is crucial. The overwhelming majority of cultural audiences support climate action (Act Green 2023 survey). This shouldn’t be work we do behind-the-scenes – it should be happening with the support and input of those who make theatre possible. 𝟱. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 💡: All theatres and theatre businesses are going to need significant investment in technologies that help reduce their carbon footprint. Public investment in this space is likely to be limited in coming years, and while we should loudly advocate for it, we’re going to need other solutions. We need to get real about the costs, and start thinking about where the money is going to come from. Almost every day I speak with people in the industry who are passionate about building a greener and fairer future, and that gives me so much hope. But I also believe the journey ahead will have to be less evolution and more revolution if we’re really going to see the change we need.
Theatre managers are "confident" theatres can reach net zero by 2030, but have called on the wider industry to account for unavoidable carbon emissions 👇
