The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly nine years ago, represent a collective global effort to confront major challenges, including the imperative of SDG 2 to eradicate hunger and enhance nutrition by 2030. However, ongoing issues such as conflict, climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising inequalities have severely impacted progress, jeopardizing the well-being of millions of children. In light of these challenges, the DBSA’s social investment program specifically targets the early childhood development (ECD) sector, placing a strong focus on nutrition as a vital component. Children are the most vulnerable to the effects of Hidden Hunger. Malnutrition in early childhood can lead to lifelong challenges, from stunted growth to cognitive delays. From the third trimester to the second birthday, a million synapses a second are formed in a well-nourished brain, creating the foundation on which all learning, behaviour and health depend. Dairy and Nutrition in the Global South Twenty years after the establishment of Ethiopia’s Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP), a major social protection system, the country’s government, donors, and other stakeholders are implementing multidimensional graduation model programs that are designed to complement the PSNP’s monthly food and cash transfers. Graduation models include multiple interventions such as large asset or lump-sum transfers, training, savings promotion, and other forms of nutrition, health, or psychosocial support. These models aim to move beyond cash or food transfers to ensure minimum consumption levels and address the multiple challenges that can trap poor households in poverty. In the 1990s, one in four children in South Africa had stunted growth, an indicator of chronic hunger. In the 2020s, one in four children are still stunted, highlighting that not enough progress has been made on on the constitutional right of everyone in South Africa to 'access to sufficient food', and the constitutional right of every child to 'basic nutrition.' Within the 'Voice of Beneficiaries' book lies a testament to the profound impact of collective action in tackling undernutrition, a persistent challenge in Tanzania. Amidst governmental commitment and policy frameworks like the National Multi-sectoral Nutrition Action Plan (NMNAP), undernutrition persists, particularly among children under 5. Through the USAID Lishe Endelevu project, implemented by Save the Children Tanzania, strides are made towards realizing Tanzania's ambitious goal of reducing child stunting from 34 to 28 percent by 2021. This endeavor encompasses targeted interventions in four regions, aiming to diminish stunting, enhance dietary diversity among women of reproductive age, and improve feeding practices for young children. As we journey through the voices within this book, may they serve as a poignant reminder of the collective efforts and unwavering dedication required to nurture a healthier, nourished future for Tanzania's children and communities.

We recently hosted an exciting event to officially launch our newest project, Transforming Lives Through Nutrition, a collaboration between Helen Keller Intl, Vitamin Angels and iDE (International Development Enterprises). Funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this initiative aims to improve the nutrition of underserved pregnant women, infants, and young children globally. We were honored to be joined at our official launch by Dr. Joseph Lenai, the Director of Primary Health Care, Senator Esther Okenyuri, a member of the Senate Health Committee in Kenya and several members of the Church. We also welcomed several of our entrepreneurs who will be collaborating on creating more access and availability of nutrient-rich food in the Kenyan market. Malnutrition is a multisectoral problem and much of the high malnutrition rates in Kenya are due to poverty. iDE Kenya’s Nutrition Project Manager, June Cherutich, MPH, believes that the “Transforming Lives Through Nutrition initiative’s unique approach of powering entrepreneurs allows vulnerable communities to access nutritious foods for their children and households as well as earn household income. Dietary diversity is the key to preventing malnutrition and preventable childhood illnesses. I had one of my best moments so far in the month of September the day before yesterday😁 The thrive and impact lives foundation gave me an opportunity to talk to teenagers at the little saints orphanage home, Lagos. My first time having a wholesome conversation with #teenage boys on relationships. 🫢 Shocked to have heard some responses on why they are not in a relationship ( of course we asked them this question so that they can pour out their heart, which they really did). Some mentioned, they fear being billed, some said they don't want to be heartbroken and some said it's a distraction. One particular boy said he would want to be in a relationship because experience is the best teacher ( lots of explanations were really done to debunk this myth) It was also a wonderful experience as we gave the home the little we could gather, thanks to over 50 supporters who gave their selfless contributions towards the success of the Orphanage visit. Recently, I learned that 2.33 billion people worldwide struggle to access food regularly, according to the 2024 report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (#FAO,2024). Additionally, the newly released #Global Hunger Index ranks Nigeria 109th out of 125 countries, placing it in the severe #hunger category. It's crucial that we address this issue, as failing to do so will lead to young people facing nutrition-related diseases, which will only worsen our economy. In a few years, we'll rely on the younger generation to replace the aging workforce, and if they are not healthy and strong, the impact will be significant. In essence, the younger generation must be well-nurtured to eventually take over from the older generation. If we neglect this, we will realize too late the importance of raising them properly. I commend the efforts of @thrive_impactlives_foundation for nurturing young minds and @little_saints_orphanage for the care they provide to these children.
