Every time we conclude a semester of The Heritage Foundation's Young Leaders Program (YLP), I wonder where the weeks have gone. Countless policy briefings, First Principles lectures, skill development briefings, days of Capitol Hill training, shared meals, even salsa dances (thanks, Roger Severino), not to mention all the hard work on the job...it's hard to claim this isn't the best internship in the Nation's Capital. It's always a bitter-sweet day when it all ends, and we watch our next batch of torchbearers leave to take on the world. But they've been taking on the world for years, so we have nothing but optimism. America's future is forged here at Heritage, and, man, am I honored to be a part of it. These things don't just happen. Mary Catherine Machalec, your tireless, daily devotion to running this program is inspiring. I know and everyone knows: this isn't a job for you...this is a calling. Every day, you wake up feeling dangerous (thanks, Baker Mayfield); and you fight for all the best reasons. You fight to build humans who love humanity. Thank you. And what would YLP be without our Student Programs intern, Macy Gunnell? When pitching YLP to outside audiences, I regularly highlight that Heritage interns don't just fetch coffee and fill a headcount. They do real work. And their work is indispensable. That's why almost one-quarter of Heritage's staff is former interns. We put our money where our mouth is. Macy, you're the best of them, and these 50+ interns wouldn't have had the semester they did without you. I'm thrilled to see the places you go. It was fantastic to attend the #CIMA Career Confidence event at Lancaster University last week, with a panel of experts sharing their experiences on advancing their careers in Finance. Although the advice given was for finance professionals, as a recruiter I took so much away from it that will help me in guiding the professionals I speak to every day. Here were some key takeaways: ⭐️ Show your personality through your CV. Consider how have you added value to businesses you have worked at through your passion projects. ⭐️ If you’ve joined a business and realised it’s not the right match for you, then have the courage to walk away, and find the role that is. ⭐️ Be curious. Build your knowledge through asking questions of those around you. ⭐️ Embrace technology. The roles within Finance are constantly changing with the advancement of software, and it’s best to lean into it and learn to utilise what’s available. Florida is on track to be #1 in the nation for workforce education by 2030. My top 5 takeaways from Adrienne Johnston's recent interview with Florida SBDC Network discussing how CareerSource Florida is helping reach this goal. 1. The CareerSource network is committed to expanding the labor force by including people who have significant barriers to employment. Doing this by equipping them with the resources and tools to succeed in a tight labor market. 2. Small businesses can get direct support, guidance, and resources, for the hiring, training, and retaining process of their employees all in one place. 3. There are over 100 CareerSource locations spread across every region of the state. EVERY business and EVERY person has access. Rural, urban, skilled, unskilled, there is a one-stop center nearby where people can get resources. 4. Apprenticeships are expanding outside of traditional "apprenticeship" industries. Working with CareerSource, the Healthcare, IT, and Data Analytics industries have all stood up recognized apprenticeship programs over the past year. This provides more opportunities for more Floridians. 5. Workforce system funding declines as the unemployment level decreases. This reality forces efficiencies across the entire system. The Lazard New Visions Academy, a partnership with New Visions for Public Schools, is a signature initiative of the Lazard Foundation that provides New York City public high school students the opportunity to gain vital knowledge, experience and relationships to set them on a path toward future professional career. Throughout the five-week summer program, Lazard colleagues across our Financial Advisory and Asset Management businesses volunteered their time and expertise. They engaged in career panels, development sessions, resume workshops, mock interviews, networking activities, and supported students in completing their final capstone projects. Hear directly from our volunteers about how this rewarding experience has not only impacted the students but also enriched their own lives and professional development.

Providing data, evidence and insight to our Members about all things youth employment is exactly what we are here for. Youth Employment UK has expert knowledge across the whole youth employment landscape, what is driving youth unemployment, what the system issues are, what young people aged 11-30 including those who are NEET are telling us what works and does not work and of course what the impacts and plans are of policy and policy makers. Add in the expert insight we have on what makes #GoodYouthEmployment and the value of Membership speaks for itself. For 12 years we have been digging into the issues and solutions and given that youth unemployment is a growing issue, we absolutely need to see more of that expert insight put into practice by employers, providers and policy makers. Employers who understand the issues facing young people are much better equipped to ensure that their business is part of the solution and having a real people, social and future skills impact.
