One of my favorite concert violinists and music professors of all time, Itzhak Perlman, said “If you learn it slowly, you forget it slowly. If you learn something very quickly, you forget it immediately.” I can attest to this phenomenon firsthand. I used to rush through my practice sessions to cover a lot of material. As a result, I would make significant gains in one practice session, but those games would disappear literally overnight. Plenty of research shows us that spacing out. Our learning sessions and testing ourselves often are two of the best things we can do to learn quickly. When we try to cram in a lot of material in one session, we end up encoding almost all of that information into short-term memory instead of long-term memory. This is why, the next day, a lot of that improvement seems to disappear. Check out my youtube channel for my latest video on one of the best strategies you can use to memorize your music quickly: https://lnkd.in/exiFh_SQ #SpanishGuitarMastery #FlamencoGuitar #ClassicalGuitar #SpanishGuitar #PracticeStrategies #ExpertPerformance #GuitarScience #HowToPractice #LearnGuitarFaster #GuitarPractice #MusicPractice

Music has the power to move people—to make the heart race and the breath catch. How does it do that? To find out, Elaine Chew, SM ’98, PhD ’00, a concert pianist and professor of engineering at King's College London, has been developing novel methods for studying music and its physiological impacts. Her work includes musical compositions based on unusual heart rhythms and systems for measuring and analyzing how classical music impacts the heart. “It’s actually a very challenging problem to try to model music response,” she says. “It’s probably one of the most difficult problems one can choose to tackle in music research.” https://bit.ly/4hrsNsn
