With the final curtain closing on this year’s UN Climate Change Week NYC, we have to ask ourselves why the fashion industry is still moving backwards when it comes to its carbon footprint. With every climate event such as Climate Week NYC and COP the spotlight falls on fashion as one of the most polluting industries and we all agree that we need change. But why is it just not happening fast enough? Rachel Carnanzkey explores why and looks at what really needs to happen in her piece “Fashion’s carbon footprint is outpacing its climate progress”. It’s good to talk, but we need to take action. #sustainablity #UNclimateweek2024 #sustainablefashion #climateweeknyc https://lnkd.in/dpAwSHWg

At #COP29, countries will face intense pressure to fulfill the ambitious climate commitments made last year. The fashion industry, a major polluter, will be under heightened scrutiny to accelerate its decarbonization efforts. 👀 While progress has been made in reducing reliance on fossil fuels, more rapid action is expected. A key focus will be on cutting carbon emissions through renewable energy investments and setting strict timelines. Additionally, there will likely be a push for sustainable materials that can revolutionize the industry. The fashion industry needs to adopt tangible, scalable solutions to minimize its environmental impact, with clear, aligned targets. We are committed to staying informed about the latest regulations and developments in this rapidly changing landscape. By navigating these changes, we can ensure our practices align with the newest standards and expectations. 🌍 A Manifesto for #Leather at #COP29: Buy Better, Buy Less, Buy Leather 🌍 As global consumption continues to drive climate change, it's time to shift our focus to durable, sustainable materials like leather. With its #durability, repairability, and long lifespan, leather offers a stark contrast to fast fashion and its devastating environmental impact. At COP29, we urge global leaders to recognise the true value of natural materials—like leather—in building a #sustainable future and reducing the environmental impact of consumer goods. Together, we can champion slow fashion and embrace materials that promote #circularity. 📎 https://lnkd.in/eufqjfcE Let’s make the shift: Buy better, buy less, buy leather 👜👞 #COP29 #Sustainability #LeatherIndustry #CircularEconomy #SlowFashion #ManifestoForLeather

It’s #ClimateEmergencyDay 🌎🚨⏰ Today Climate Clocks around the world will tick down below 5 years at the same moment. We officially have less than five years to dramatically reduce fossil fuel emissions to stay below 1.5C degrees warming. Our clothes are fuelling environmental breakdown and global disaster. The fashion industry’s dependence on fossil fuels, used in everything from materials to manufacturing, is fanning the flames of the climate crisis 🏭🛢️🔥 Despite the urgency of this crisis, the 2023 Global #FashionTransparencyIndex found that only a third of major brands have a decarbonisation target. Even more alarmingly, only 9% disclose how they will support investment towards decarbonisation in their supply chain. To stop climate catastrophe, big fashion must make bold progress on systemic climate solutions. Brands, #DontbeFuelish Every minute, every second counts. It's #TimeToEndFossilFuels and #TimeToFundOurFuture We’ll be investigating how brands’ decarbonisations claims hold up in our new report #WhatFuelsFashion launching next week! 🚨 Sign up to our newsletter for early access: https://ow.ly/CVc750SrJyR #ClimateClock #ActInTime #4Years

Why do we pick one day as Earth Day? Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to bring attention to our beloved planet, but it's definitely not the only day we should be thinking about Mother Earth. With issues like global warming on the rise, overpopulation putting a strain on resources, and a concerning amount of clothes ending up in landfills, it's clear we need to be more mindful every day. Building a more sustainable future includes embracing circular fashion, and encouraging us to give pre-loved clothes a second life. By educating people about the impact of their choices and promoting more eco-friendly practices, we can work towards making every day feel like Earth Day. Let's show our planet some love every day, not just once a year! #Ditchfastbrandsgosecondhand
