✨☀️ Reflections from Samoa: Advancing Nagoya Protocol Implementation in the Pacific ☀️✨ This week, I had the privilege of visiting beautiful Samoa to conduct the terminal review of the UNEP/GEF Project “Ratification and Implementation of the Nagoya Protocol in the Countries of the Pacific,” implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) during 2017-2022. The project has been instrumental in building capacity and fostering collaboration across 14 Pacific nations—Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu—to advance the ratification and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol. As a result of this project, the number of Pacific countries that ratified the Nagoya Protocol increased from five to ten, marking a significant step forward in regional biodiversity governance. At the same time, despite these impressive achievements, small island nations in the Pacific continue to face challenges in implementing the Nagoya Protocol, including limited resources, technical capacity, and institutional support. During my visit to Samoa, I had the opportunity to meet the project team, reflect on the successes and lessons learned, and explore how the outcomes of this initiative can contribute to the future of biodiversity governance in the Pacific. Samoa’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture provided an inspiring background for this important work. It’s a reminder of why we dedicate ourselves to protecting the natural beauty and ecological wealth of our planet for generations to come. Many thanks to Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), Amanda Wheatley, 'Ofa Ma'asi Kaisamy, Rahul Arvind Chand, Easter Chu Shing, Daniel Robinson, Alvin Sen, Clark Peteru, and Kathleen Taituave-Afereti for their insights and input to this terminal review. Additional thanks to the UNEP staff for making this mission possible: Sangjin Lee, Aska Ochiel, and Peerayot Sidonrusmee #NagoyaProtocol #PacificIslands #BiodiversityConservation #Samoa #UNEP #GEF #SPREP #EnvironmentalGovernance #SustainableDevelopment

The ISB II Project is a collaboration between the ACB and the Federal Government of Germany through the GIZ Philippines and the Pacific Island Countries. It started in 2019 and achieved significant gains for biodiversity conservation in the ASEAN region, particularly in: 🌱 strengthening the organisational capacity of the ACB 🌱 strengthening the ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme 🌱 enhancing ACB's knowledge management system 🌱 mainstreaming biodiversity across development sectors. #ISBIIClosingForum #ACBGermanyCooperation #WeAreASEANBiodiversity

🌱 Reflecting on My Experience with the Ceres Project 🌱 I recently had the privilege of contributing to the CERES Project, an interdisciplinary research initiative dedicated to understanding the complex effects of water barriers built along rivers. Working with a dynamic team, we focused on several key aspects of the project: 🔍 Environmental Impact: We studied how these barriers influence river ecosystems, from disrupting natural water flow to affecting local biodiversity. Our work provided valuable insights into how these changes alter habitats and ecological systems over time. 🌊 Water Management: As climate change puts increasing pressure on water resources, the project explored how these barriers can be optimized for sustainable water usage. From irrigation needs to flood control, balancing human and environmental requirements was a central focus. 👩🏫 Socioeconomic Impact: One of the most fascinating elements was analyzing how these barriers affect local communities, particularly in Aljezur, Portugal. We explored their impact on agriculture, access to water, and local economies, giving voice to the people living in these areas. From analyzing data to contributing to ongoing legal efforts, the work has challenged me to think critically about sustainable development and the role of policy in safeguarding both natural resources and livelihoods. It's been rewarding to see how our research can support meaningful, real-world outcomes—particularly when helping inform key decisions in court cases. Overall, this project has been an eye-opening experience, reinforcing the critical need for sustainable and adaptive solutions when managing natural resources. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn and contribute alongside passionate colleagues. Here’s to more collaborations that help bridge the gap between research, policy, and real-world impact! 🌍✨ #EnvironmentalResearch #CeresProject #WaterManagement #Sustainability #Ecosystems #CommunityImpact #LegalSupport #InterdisciplinaryResearch #SustainableDevelopment

🌍 And it's on! The 11th Session of the IPBES Plenary officially kicked off today, with IPBES Chair and CORDIO East Africa Director David Obura leading the launch in Windhoek, Namibia. This marks the first time the annual meeting is hosted in Africa, and it will run until December 16th, 2024. 🌱 The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental body established by States to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development. The governing body of IPBES (known as the IPBES Plenary) – made up of the representatives of IPBES member States – usually meets once per year. 🌐 During #IPBES11, the members of IPBES will discuss the following: ✅ Approval of the Nexus Assessment Report: examining the interlinkages among food, water, health for all, biodiversity, and climate change. ✅ Approval of the Transformative Change Assessment Report: exploring societal factors—behavioral, social, cultural, economic, institutional, technical, and technological—that can drive transformative change for biodiversity conservation, restoration, and sustainable use. ✅ Approval of the scoping report for the second global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services. ✅ Approval of the work plans for the IPBES Technical Support Units. ✅ Approval of the IPBES budget. These discussions will be vital in shaping global policies and actions to create more resilient, sustainable futures for people and nature worldwide. 🌍💚 Find more updates on the IPBES page.
