IMM Maschinenbau GmbH’s Post

The worlds most advanced turbine blade grinding and polishing system: The MTS machine tool from IMM in Germany. The MTS allows the automation of polishing and grinding of all kind of turbine blades such as forged, milled, cast and printed blades and vanes up to 2.200 mm in length and 800 mm chord width. The MTS is a robust machine with a long track record. The process delivers reproducible and repeatable results - perfect airfoils; every time. It takes blade and airfoil quality to the next level and the process is extremely fast with rapid polishing cycle times. The machine is enclosed and this helps to protect workers and operators from harmful dust, vibrations and noise. As the use of coolant eliminates any airborne dusts, the wet processing of blades prevents any heat induced damage of the airfoil at the same time. A nice side effect of the coolant is significant reduced abrasive media costs compared to any dry polishing and finishing processes. The belt head is designed for belts of 3.500 mm length and various widths up to 40 mm. Several interchangeable tool units are available with contact wheels from 35 mm to 200 mm in diameter or holders for slack belt polishing of sharp edges as well as radius units for blade root and shroud polishing. Controlled by a SIEMENS CNC control makes it easy to be operated by shop floor operators. Common work piece fixturing is used.
