How do we turn vaccine hesitancy into vaccine confidence? I was delighted to be a part of this session this morning with Claremont Comms exploring how behavioural science can help improve vaccine uptake. In recent years, declining vaccination rates have led the World Health Organization to label ‘vaccine hesitancy’ as a top global health threat. During the pandemic I was part of a team that developed guidance for local authorities to increase vaccine uptake, the briefing attached provides an overview of our findings from a rapid review of the literature to develop a series of guiding principles and evidence-based recommendations. The key takeaways form this paper are to support behaviour change are: 1. Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy: We found that vaccine hesitancy often stems from three core factors: confidence (trust in the vaccine’s safety), complacency (underestimating COVID-19 risks), and convenience (access challenges). Our goal? Address each barrier with empathy, not judgment. Tailored messaging can shift perspectives if it resonates with each community’s unique experiences. 2. Creating Trusting Connections: Effective communication isn't about bombarding people with information. It’s about listening first. Through ongoing dialogue, we can build messages that validate concerns and share honest, clear information. From case studies to real stories, we’ve seen how using familiar voices from within the community makes all the difference. 3. Making Vaccination Convenient: From flexible hours to clear directions, a smooth, accessible experience is crucial for encouraging people to get vaccinated. Little details like transport options or easy appointment reminders aren’t just logistics—they’re powerful tools to remove barriers. 4. Engaging the Heart of the Community: When people see their neighbours, faith leaders, or family members getting vaccinated, it builds a sense of shared purpose. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all challenge; it’s about co-creating solutions that reflect our community’s needs and values. I truly believe this work can pave the way for greater health equity, one conversation at a time. Follow me for more insights on how behavioural science can drive impactful change in health and beyond.
