Great advice for anyone interested in getting a job in sustainability.
Director of Sustainability at Brightest I Keynote speaker on AI and Sustainability I TEDx speaker I Climate Activist 🍃
Tips on how to get a job in sustainability 🌿 (Posted by Nina Benoit) I receive messages daily from people asking for job opportunities or tips on how to work in sustainability, so here are a few tips. 1. Prove to me that you are passionate about sustainability. I receive many applications from people who have no clear experience in sustainability but really want to have a job with an impact. That's okay. But there are still ways to prove to me that you are applying for this job because you are genuinely passionate about sustainability. You could enroll in a free online course about sustainability on Coursera, or become a volunteer for an NGO and add that to your CV. No matter what it is, if nothing on your CV shows that you really care about sustainability, it will be hard for me to believe it. 2. Network, network, network I know you've already heard this a million times but networking with people in the field is one of the best ways to get a job. Attend sustainability fairs like ChangeNOW, join online events from Terra.do, and reach out to people on LinkedIn for tips. Many jobs are simply not posted on LinkedIn and will never be, so create your own opportunities. 3. Inform yourself about current sustainability trends Make sure to keep up to date with the latest sustainability trends to impress your recruiter. Spoiler alert: if you are looking for jobs in Europe you should definitely look into what the CSRD is. There are many great newsletters you can subscribe to like Brightest's newsletter, Green Digest, or ESG Today. Hope this was helpful and looking forward to seeing more people joining this field of work 🍃 #jobs #sustainability #esg

This is a great article to share with Career Development professionals, students, and graduates. A key takeaway from this article is understanding that "a sustainable career involves three dimensions: person, context, and time which means a person’s career unfolds across various contexts throughout their career span". Creating a sustainable career requires individuals to take ownership of their careers while identifying and adapting to external influences. I acknowledge that it's essential to take a holistic approach to support students and graduates, seeing their health, happiness, and productivity as indicators of sustainable careers that are central to their career decision-making process. https://lnkd.in/gWECCNyd

8 Smart, Low-Risk Strategies to Test-Drive Your Climate Career Move If you have an area you think might be right for your career transition into climate, sustainability or greenwork then you obviously you need to explore if it is right for you But LOOKING at job boards will not move you forward. THINKING about what it might be like in a new role will not improve your confidence in making a switch either. It is the DOING that will truly give you the feedback you need to decide to continue exploring a particular sector in the quest to find your niche. But, jumping into an expensive training course, or taking a secondment for six months comes with a risk. What if you are wrong? Better to incrementally climb the “Commitment Ladder” A series of exploratory steps that increase in effort and contribute to your knowledge of the area of choice Each investigative step should meet the following criteria and build on the step before it. ✅ It should take no more time, effort or cost than is necessary to give you the information to decide to persevere or pivot ✅ It will make clear to you whether your idea has some viability as future work ✅ It must be based in the real world – or in other words, involve the principle of ‘Genchi Genbutsu’ (Google that for the nuanced version but the Japanese translates broadly as ‘go see for yourself’ ✅ Ideally it will build your network, result in a tangible output that will support your future credibility or enable you to help someone in the field of interest ✅ It MUST be time-bound, remember you are seeking to accelerate your search and avoid procrastination along the way. At the end of the project, reflect on what you’ve learned and use your criteria to decide if this is an area you want to persevere with or pivot from. Wait you don’t know your criteria??!! Put this down and go and figure those out first. (How can you know if you’ve found what you’re looking for if you don’t know what you want!) Curious - what have you done as part of your research and where would you place it on the Commitment Ladder? Answer in comments below #climatecareer #sustainabilityjobs #greenjobs #careerchange #careercoach --- I'm Andy Nelson ThePositiveCareerCoach I help talented midcareer professionals like you navigate the climate and sustainability landscape to find their niche.
