As a loyal Dyson customer for a couple of decades now, buying products across the vacuum, cooling and haircare ranges, I have been very pleased with the design, performance and product quality. Sadly as they say, 'all good things come to an end' and Dyson Customer Services should be ashamed. Let me explain; I recently invested in a new V12 vacuum cleaner as my long-in-the-tooth V8 had an issue with the on/off trigger. However, within a couple of months, one of the wheels fell off the cleaning head, and now a month later the other one has dropped off too. This is a strange conundrum, as my previous V8 was cleaning the same floors and stairs and the wheels are absolutely rock solid! I have had the run around with Dyson customer support. The retailer said go to the Dyson Store, the Dyson Store said go back to your retailer or call Dyson support. But after discussing the issue via Whatsapp and email, apparently, the wheels shearing off is a wear and tear problem and not covered under warranty. This is frustrating as on Reddit, Facebook and other forums there are 100s of complaints about these style wheels falling off, Dyson has replaced the head unit in a couple of countries, but others they seem to push loyal customers to replace the parts at their own cost. Being a former Engineer and looking at the issue at hand, the Dyson team have changed the design, probably for cost reduction purposes. The screws on the older models were longer and screwed into plastic that to the touch is thicker and therefore less prone to shear forces. As someone who lives for neutrals, I feel this color! And Motorola Solutions? They’ve already jumped on the trend. They’re making phones in this shade because apparently 'your gadgets need to match your vibe now'. A phone in Mocha Mousse? I mean that's all in set with the whole 'chill guy' mood. How far can a brand extend beyond it's core? It depends. Sometimes brand extensions really fly and sometimes they are just a stretch too far. It's us, the paying customers, who ultimately decide. Dyson announced yesterday that they are launching their second headphones offering (this time audio-only as apposed to the previous, highly-rated, noise-cancelling/air-purifying ones). As Dyson is best known for vacuum cleaners, I wonder how the meeting went when someone first suggested headphones? I'll be honest, if I got to talk brand extension strategy with any other vacuum cleaner brands, I am not sure headphones would be top of my list. Shark or Vax headphones anyone? However, I own 'a Dyson' and I find myself quite surprised that I would consider buying their headphones (although perhaps not once I've seen the price!) And I'm sure I am not alone. Hats off Dyson.
