If you remember two or three decades back, there can be no doubt that the Bologna Process has been an important game-changer in higher education during the last 25 years. It has not only enabled student mobility, staff exchange and internationalisation@home but empowered innovation and transformation of higher education in many (strategic) aspect of education, research, innovation and sevices with/for society. It is a pity that the Bologna Process is still not fully implemented (or even understood). To my opinion blaming Bologna for manifold challenges as it is still fashionable in some countries and universities - even after all these years and the many (untold?) success-stories - is one of the reasons why higher education tends to lack behind fast progress of technological developments like AI and is not strong enough to overcome societal, economic and ecological challenges. There can’t be any doubt that higher education institutions have to amplify and accelerate an ongoing transformation into „future universities“ based on open inclusive and interdisciplinary teaching and learning methods that enable inspiring learning experiences. We also need new approaches and impulses as key drivers for the next decades. European Universities and European Degrees (as recently proposed by the European Commission) should rapidly be co-developed into strong European brands and widely visible guiding lights! Federal ministries should act opportunity-driven, take the momentum and fully support the European ideas and concepts to avoid that we lack behind on global levels even more. EURASHE, E³UDRES² European University, Fachhochschule St. Pölten, all the other European Alliances, the many partnering universities and our stakeholders are ready to shape the next area of higher education in Europe! We thank the European Commission and in particular Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, Sophia Eriksson Waterschoot, Vanessa Debiais-Sainton and their teams for ongoing support and co-creation. We hope that the ongoing EHEA Ministerial Conference in Tirana is not only an important moment of reflection but also a memorable starting point for further developments, innovation and transformation during upcoming years.
