Meat has historically been crucial in human diets. Recently, Megan L. Meyer, Communication Assistant and Agricultural Communications student, summarized a 2023 peer-reviewed journal article by Dr. Frédéric Leroy and colleagues, under the scientific guidance of Dr. Pedro Urriola. The research delves into the historical and nutritional role of meat in human diets, spanning over three million years of human evolution. The study emphasizes that not all protein sources are equal, and meat stands out as a superior provider, requiring less consumption to meet protein requirements than plant-based protein sources. Furthermore, meat significantly contributes to the global nutrient supply, offering essential elements that are critical for human health. These findings challenge misconceptions about the impact of meat consumption on health and the environment. They underscore the importance of considering all aspects of meat production and nutrition when making dietary choices. Incorporating lean meat, such as pork, into a balanced diet can have positive effects on human health and the global economy. 🐕 Dogs and cats in the US consume as much meat as the fifth-largest meat-eating country, negatively impacting their health and the environment. Earth Animal, a company co-founded by Susan Goldstein, advocates for plant-based dog food as a healthier alternative. Research suggests that properly balanced plant-based diets can provide all necessary nutrients for dogs, reduce inflammation, and avoid the negative impacts of meat production on health and the environment. Protein transition has been a prevailing conservation in food systems in this present times. Here is a simple breakdown of what is about. Protein transition refers to shifting from an animal protein-dominated diet to a plant protein-dominated one. This change is driven by the inefficiencies in current animal protein production, such as its large environmental footprint, poor animal welfare, and health risks linked to excessive processed meat consumption. The conversation mainly applies to developed countries, where animal protein dominates the diet. Over a decade ago, experts recommended reducing animal protein consumption by a third in many Western nations, as intake levels were 150% above the recommended amount for health and sustainability. Coming from Nigeria, this was not a common discussion. Instead, the focus was on increasing animal protein intake to ensure adequate nutrition was the topic. This highlights the importance of context and nuance in global food systems. #proteintransition #sustainability #foodsystemstuesday

Plant-Based vs. Meat: Get B12 From the Source! Many believe that B12 only comes from animal products, but here’s the truth: B12 is made by bacteria in the soil! When animals consume plants grown in healthy soils, they absorb this nutrient. That means you’re not getting B12 directly from the meat but from the plants the animals ate. By consuming organic, soil-rich produce (and not over-washing), you’re getting B12 straight from the source—without the saturated fat and risks of animal-based diets. So, why rely on a middleman? Go plant-based for a cleaner, healthier source of B12 and a longer life! 🌱💚 #B12FromTheSource #PlantPower #HealthScience #VeganicFarming #PlantBased #GoVegan Supporting Research: Studies show plant-based diets lower the risk of chronic diseases, and while B12 is commonly found in meat, it originally comes from soil bacteria.

Feed standards also referred to as feeding standards are statements or quantitative descriptions or tables listing the amounts of 1 or more nutrients needed by different species of animals for specific productive functions. They are usually expressed in either quantities of nutrients required per day or concentrations of percentage of a diet. #GeneralAgriculture

Andrew Gregory wrote a very telling piece about the impact of poor diets on children. Obviously, children being shorter, fatter, and sicker is a bad thing in itself, but there is a much bigger point behind this. In the book "Animal, Vegetable, Junk", Alan Bitman explores the history of human diets. While agriculture is the foundation of modern society, when humans first transitioned to agriculture people went from a varied but unstable diet to a much more predictable one with much less variety. The outcome... people lost on average 5 inches in height. People then, were not accustomed to this way of eating and it had a measured impact on growth. Now, over the intervening years, this has been remedied (to an extent and modern diets notwithstanding) but the key point here is that the fundamental change in diet stunted human growth. I don't think it too much of a leap to suggest that the explosion of UPF foods in our diet is a comparably systemic change and this finding is further evidence of it. Maybe in time we will be able to better process UPF foods and moderate our intake but I think its probably better to try and remedy this now rather than wait for 12,000 years like we did with agriculture. Not least because, as the article suggests, this disproportionately impacts the poorest in society. #upf #food #health #foodpolicy #regulation #foodequality
