What do a barcode and an egg have in common? They both contain a 'secret code'. In the case of an egg, we call it a biomarker - and at In Ovo, we've discovered one that's making history. This unique biomarker enables us to determine the sex of an egg long before it hatches with high speed and accuracy. Curious about how this works and why it's such a breakthrough for the poultry industry? Read the full article here 👇 https://lnkd.in/epVhm5d4

Over ons
In Ovo is a biotech company situated in Leiden. We develop and design high-tech solutions for the poultry industry to improve animal welfare and efficiency. Our disruptive products have a significant, positive impact on farmers, animals, and the sector. We innovate today, to improve tomorrow. We are an agile and lean company, with a highly educated, enthusiastic team. Our main focus is on solving a long-existing problem in hatcheries: the culling of one-day-old male chicks. Our solution determines the gender in the egg before the chick hatches, to prevent male chicks from having to be killed. Fewer chicks will then need to hatch, which increases efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions in hatcheries. This way, we make hatcheries more animal-friendly and sustainable. You can be part of the disruptive innovations we work on. You can be part of our story. If you are up for a new adventure, please check our vacancies below now at jobs.inovo.nl.

People ask us a lot of questions on a daily basis, and this one is definitely in the top-3: "What happens to the male eggs after you separate them from the female eggs?" Long story short; they are not wasted, they're used for pet food. Once the male eggs are separated from the females, they are collected and picked up by one of our partners. The eggs are subjected to a spray drying technique (which is basically a giant hairdryer) to turn the inside of the eggs into fine, protein-rich powder. The powder is used as a supplement in high-quality pet food, giving some essential nutrients to the hairy friends we love most (assuming that’s your pet). The shells, on the other hand, aren't discarded either. They’re processed into pecking stones for chickens, which have two benefits. They supply calcium to the birds, crucial for their bone strength and the quality of their eggshells. Also, the birds enjoy pecking at it a lot, and it’s great for their maintaining beak health. Shortly said: calcium pecking stones = good stuff. To recap: the male eggs that are taken out of the hatching process are not wasted. They’re actually entering a new process themselves that creates a lot of value inside and outside of the poultry industry 🐣

After 11 remarkable years, In Ovo enters a new phase. Our founders, Wil Stutterheim and Wouter Bruins, have stepped down, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of innovation and impact. In 2013, they started In Ovo with a bold mission that many thought impossible: to put an end to the practice of culling male chicks in the egg industry. Today, we've not just created an amazing technology - we've prevented the culling of millions of chicks. This is the end of an era, and a new beginning. We confidently look to the future. Under the leadership of CEO Anouk ter Laak and board chair Judith Batchelar OBE, we remain committed to our mission by growing In Ovo globally. Wil and Wouter will continue to support our journey as shareholders, ensuring the continuity of our vision. We thank them for everything.

Why we use mass spectrometry for in ovo sexing? Because it's extremely accurate, very fast and cost-effective. Mass spectrometry finds our unique and patented biomarker, which shows if an egg is male or female. All within a second, and all we need is a tiny sample. Ella (our machine) can process thousands of eggs per our. And the best part is; the more eggs we test, the cheaper it gets! And it doesn't stop there. Mass spectrometry can detect multiple biomarkers, which will help future developments for both production efficiency and animal welfare. Want to know more? Please visit www.inovo.nl

(Environmental) knowledge is bliss ✨ Turns out, people who know more about environmental issues are putting their money where their mouth is - literally! According to a recent study by the University of Milan, food-related sustainability knowledge drives consumers’ food choices. More specifically for eggs, Italian consumers with higher eco-knowledge are more likely to pay extra for sustainable options. Free-range, organic, and locally produced eggs? Yes, please! 🥚 The research involved 996 consumers, suggesting that education around sustainability plays a key role in shaping food choices and how much people are willing to spend on it. Interestingly, the more informed the consumer, the higher the value they placed on environmental-friendly attributes. This demonstrates a clear link between understanding the impact of food production and being willing to support sustainable products. At In Ovo, we believe in raising awareness to contribute to a positive shift and a better future of food production. What’s your go-to sustainable food choice?
