The Canada Post strike is a moment that highlights the broader conversations around labor rights and the importance of ensuring fair practices across industries. While strikes can bring about necessary change, they also come with challenges, especially during this time of year, with Black Friday and the holiday season fast approaching. This is where the strength of our community truly matters. During times like these, it’s crucial for us to come together, supporting both those fighting for better standards and those impacted by service disruptions. Whether it’s local businesses relying on timely deliveries or families sending gifts to loved ones, we all have a role to play in keeping things moving. So let’s work together to make this holiday season special, despite the hurdles. Totally agree with Nichola Mallon’s post. Logistics professionals are problem solvers in a increasingly challenging and disruptive world. These hard working teams are the backbone of supply chain operations, regularly demonstrating dynamic capabilities and creating a competitive advantage for their clients. Without these dedicated professionals global trade just wouldn’t function efficiently, with catastrophic consequences for the economy. This is the busiest week in the year for the logistics industry. The closure of Holyhead Port, until the 19th December at the earliest, and the rerouting of freight to alternative ports is significantly adding to pressures. But as I said in this inteview with BBC Radio Ulster, the logistics industry is solution focused and resilient. Thank you to all the haulage companies and drivers out there who are working tirelessly to make sure we all have what we need for Christmas. #Logistics #Heroes Logistics UK

This week has underscored the vital importance of Holyhead port for freight movements between Great Britain (GB) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI). As trade flows continue to evolve, Holyhead stands out as a key gateway. It facilitates not just goods but also economic connections between nations. However, there’s a pressing issue that cannot be ignored: the severe shortage of parking for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in Holyhead and along the A55 corridor. This shortage poses significant challenges for drivers and logistics companies alike. Imagine a bustling port where trucks arrive and depart, loaded with essential goods. Now picture those same trucks stuck on the road due to lack of parking spaces. It creates delays, increases stress for drivers, and can even disrupt supply chains. The ripple effect is felt across industries reliant on timely deliveries. The need for more HGV parking facilities is urgent. Adequate parking not only helps manage traffic flow but also ensures that drivers have safe places to rest. This is crucial for maintaining safety standards on our roads. Advocating for more HGV parking along this route should be a priority. Local authorities, businesses, and transport organizations must come together to address this issue. Investing in additional parking spaces will enhance operational efficiency and support the economy. In conclusion, while Holyhead port plays an essential role in facilitating trade between GB and ROI, we cannot overlook the infrastructure needs that accompany it. Let’s push for better HGV parking solutions to ensure that our freight movements remain smooth and effective. Together, we can make a difference!

Landed back at Birmingham Airport yesterday, and it was an absolute shambles. Three flights had landed quite close together, and there must have been about 1,000 people trying to get through 5 passport control desks. FIVE! The queue was enormous. It was stretching out of building. I've never seen anything like it. What I can't understand is why there are no toilets there. We weren't allowed to use the toilet for the last 30mins of the flight while we landed, then we get stuck in this queue for over an hour without access to a toilet. There were babies screaming for their food (which was in their luggage on the other side of passport control at baggage reclaim), there were kids crying because they were desperate for the toilet, there were people (like me) with anxiety disorders who were on the verge of panic attacks, the whole situation was a mess. And to make matters worse, one of the Border Control Agents steps off his desk to have a chat with the Queue Marshall about some cute kid who he's just let through. I thought there was going to be a riot at that point. Yes I know that the staff don't make the rules, and the vast majority were friendly and helpful. And I know that they are only following process. But that sort of situation is not acceptable. We hadn't travelled abroad for 7.5yrs until this last week, so is this really the norm now at UK Airports?! What's the cause? Brexit? Staffing issues? Something else?

We have today restated our calls for more safe and secure lorry parking, improved facilities and more action to tackle freight crime. We’re urging the next Police and Crime Commissioners ahead of the 2 May #LocalElection to prioritise these issues to support our drivers, the industry as a whole and the wider economy. This comes as the IRU and other stakeholders have made similar calls today urging the European Commission to “maintain a focused approach to certifying, upgrading, building, and funding safe and secure truck parking areas in the EU over the next three years.” We estimate we need 11,000 more safe and secure lorry parking spaces across the country as truckers are still targeted by organised crime gangs. Freight crime costs the UK economy around £250m a year. NavCIS reports that there were 5,373 reports of HGV and cargo crime in the UK in 2023, with an estimated cost of the loss in value from the thefts alone of £68m – with the retail value much higher. https://lnkd.in/ekU7uCVw #RHAFacilities IRU

Here we go again, the outrageous cost of dropping off or picking up passengers at a UK airport are forcing drivers to park on nearby local roads and as a result create congestion and danger for other drivers. This time its Newcastle International Airport who charge, at the airport car park closest to the terminal, £4 for 10 minutes, £7 for 30 minutes and £11 for an hour. Newcastle City Council rather than demand the airport drop or significantly reduce the fees for terminal drops and pick ups to solve the source of the problem, decide to introduce fines of up to £70 for those who choose to try and avoid the charge. I mean seriously? My favourite quote in this article is “A spokesperson for the airport said in August the measures were "fully supported". What’s the phrase - no **** Sherlock! The BTA continue to champion the reduction in these unfairly high charges that UK airports choose to impose even though this practice happens virtually nowhere else in the world. #dropthedropoffcharges #businesstravel #parking #airportparking #corporatetravel #travelmanagement https://lnkd.in/eKkYARrD
