Happy Recycling Week!! As part of my role at Independent Hardware Group, reducing waste and supporting a circular economy is a key focus, and in honour of Recycling Week, I’m excited to share a recent win in our business. Together, we successfully diverted 6.7 tonnes of fertiliser with damaged packaging from landfill at one of our IHG distribution centres. About a month ago, we became aware of seven pallets of fertiliser with significantly damaged packaging at our WA distribution centre. Due to the packaging this product was unable to be sold through our store network, and originally it was destined for landfill. The situation crossed my desk and I immediately started reaching out to various environmental organisations to find a home for this valuable product. Greening Australia responded to the call, and together we were able to coordinate a donation to their seed farm in Coorow, WA. This 6.7 tonnes of fertiliser will serve to support native seed production and further the incredible work that Greening Australia do to restore Australia’s landscapes and protect biodiversity. This is just one small way we at IHG contribute to creating a sustainable future and give back to our community. It was truly rewarding to be part of this project, working alongside like-minded people who were willing to think creatively and collaborate to reduce waste. I also want to recognize the dedication of my IHG colleagues in the Inventory and DC teams who went above and beyond to make this donation happen. I wanted to share this story as it is a good reminder that the circular economy goes beyond what you put in which bin. Moving towards a circular future will take determination, collaboration, innovative problem solving.
