The largest independent hardware group in Australia, and a leader when it comes to servicing the Trade market.

About us

BUILDING SUCCESSFUL INDEPENDENTS We at the Independent Hardware Group (IHG) firmly believe independent family-owned business is the engine room for entrepreneurial activity and growth of the National economy. IHG has a clear mandate to unite and strengthen the sector by supporting and investing in independent business with genuine value-add programs that protect and grow our Members’ long-term position. Who are we? IHG was formed in November 2016 as the largest channel of independent home improvement and trade operators in Australia, bringing together 700 ‘bannered’ stores and over 1,000 ‘unbannered’ businesses. Today we are a $2.1 billion business, the majority of the volume represented by the consumer-facing brands of Mitre 10 (est. 1959) and Home Hardware (est. 1993). In addition, IHG supports independent operators under the small format convenience banners Thrifty-Link Hardware and True Value Hardware, over 500 'unbannered' independent operators, Design10 and a full bathroom and kitchen appliance offer through the wholly owned Hardings business. Both Mitre 10 and Home Hardware are strong and iconic National brands with dual strengths in the Trade and DIY segments, achieved through the unique characteristics of our Members’ business – local relationships, quality products and understanding of their customers. The combined experience of the Members has seen the brands enjoy a long and proud reputation in servicing local communities. But the heritage of the Group stretches well beyond the last few decades. In fact, some of our Members drive businesses that are over 150 years old. Consumer trust and belief in our brands stems from generations of families delivering on a service and work ethic, and fostering strong relationships with their customers – the trademark of locally-owned, family-run business.

  • Here at IHG, we love how our independent stores support their local, tight-knit communities and team members, and it comes as second nature to Tuckey’s Mitre 10 in WA. When one of their long-standing team members, Mel, needed a hand to raise money for brain cancer, the Tuckey's Mitre 10 family put their right foot forward. Mel's Dad Ray had recently passed away from brain cancer and when Mel decided she wanted to make a difference and hold an event to raise much needed funds, Tuckey's was there to support Mel all the way. The event was held at local Cafe Che rie Pinjarra and their team did a superb job in making the day special for the family and friends who gathered. Mel knew her Dad would have loved the day. A big thank you to all raffle donors: Pirate Ship Mandurah; The Bike Kiosk; Tuckey's Mitre 10; Dwellingup Adventures; Peach Aesthetics; Kimmeez Crafty Crochet; Melaleuka Farm Merchants; Thorny Devil Craft Beer & Cider; Exchange Hotel Pinjarra; YETI; ANZ; Bel Ellement Stephenson; Little Stiller; Three Corner Olives; Michelle Planken; and Donna Newman. The spirit of community and support was palpable, making it a heartfelt and memorable day for everyone involved and raised crucial funds for brain cancer research. It served as a reminder of the power of collective action and empathy in times of need. This gathering showcased how a united community can make a meaningful impact while honouring the memory of a beloved individual.

Thornton's Mitre 10 in WA has a strong reputation in their community for assisting young high school leavers entering the workforce with experience and developing their confidence. Each year Thornton's Mitre 10 sends out an EOI seeking a junior member to join their friendly team. This not only assists with practical work experience in all aspects of retail but also equips those young members of their community with essential skills for future careers. Maddi will complete her gap year soon and she now has a forklift ticket and extensive experience in customer service, POS software and merchandising. With Maddi moving on shortly, that has opened the door for Xabi. He was a junior staff member working on weekends and in the school holidays. Xabi has been eager to take on more responsibility and is excited to start his gap year. Thornton's takes pride in developing career skills with these young adults, watching them grow into successful individuals. Past gap year employees have also continued on to achieve remarkable success in their careers, thanks to the foundational skills acquired at Thornton's Mitre 10.

Nick began with Mitre 10 right out of high school, and what started as a casual role picking and packing has turned into a career as a thriving young leader in our business. • At SJ & JA Wild in South Australia, they believe that every small action can make a significant difference, especially when it comes to protecting our environment. As a store in a rural area, they understand the unique challenges that come with sustainability. But also recognise the importance of doing their bit, no matter their size or location.   Krystal McMahon shared "one way we’re contributing to a greener future is by reusing packing boxes and paper supermarket bags that our customers bring in to us after they’ve finished using them. This simple practice not only helps reduce waste but also reinforces the strong sense of community we share with our customers. By reusing these materials, we’re minimising the need for new packaging, cutting down on waste, and showing that environmental responsibility isn’t just for big businesses. Our customers are at the heart of this initiative. Many of them bring back their used boxes and bags over and over, understanding that together, we can make a positive impact. It’s a small gesture, but when multiplied by the efforts of our entire community, it becomes a powerful statement of our commitment to sustainability”,   We at IHG are proud to be a part of a community that cares about the environment and is willing to take action.

  • As we farewell the previous owners of Walpole Thrifty-Link Hardware, Norm and Sue, and also Bindoon Mitre 10's Brad and Marg, we welcome two new Store Owners to our IHG family. These changes mark an exciting chapter for both communities in WA, bringing fresh perspectives and creative ideas to the hardware stores. Donna and Chris are excited to bring their enthusiasm and expertise to Walpole. In addition, Vishram's acquisition of Bindoon Mitre 10, with his nephew, Kaplesh, running the business signals continued growth and investment in the Mitre 10 Australia brand. Together, these independent Owners are poised to enhance the shopping experience and meet local customers' needs. Please join us in welcoming the new Owners. Sustainability Analyst at Independent Hardware Group 🌏🔨♻️ Supporting our planet through thoughtful business practices 💡

Happy Recycling Week!! As part of my role at Independent Hardware Group, reducing waste and supporting a circular economy is a key focus, and in honour of Recycling Week, I’m excited to share a recent win in our business. Together, we successfully diverted 6.7 tonnes of fertiliser with damaged packaging from landfill at one of our IHG distribution centres. About a month ago, we became aware of seven pallets of fertiliser with significantly damaged packaging at our WA distribution centre. Due to the packaging this product was unable to be sold through our store network, and originally it was destined for landfill. The situation crossed my desk and I immediately started reaching out to various environmental organisations to find a home for this valuable product. Greening Australia responded to the call, and together we were able to coordinate a donation to their seed farm in Coorow, WA. This 6.7 tonnes of fertiliser will serve to support native seed production and further the incredible work that Greening Australia do to restore Australia’s landscapes and protect biodiversity. This is just one small way we at IHG contribute to creating a sustainable future and give back to our community. It was truly rewarding to be part of this project, working alongside like-minded people who were willing to think creatively and collaborate to reduce waste. I also want to recognize the dedication of my IHG colleagues in the Inventory and DC teams who went above and beyond to make this donation happen. I wanted to share this story as it is a good reminder that the circular economy goes beyond what you put in which bin. Moving towards a circular future will take determination, collaboration, innovative problem solving.
