Another step forward with the establishment of an Independent Commission to undertake a much needed and long awaited review of the water industry. There’s going to be 4 new sports at the Paris 2024 Olympics: → Surfing → Sport climbing → Skateboarding → Breaking (dance battle - who would’ve thought?) Now, I love the idea of new sports entering the Olympics. And there are plenty looking for a way in like the World Football Freestyle Association - a sport that has a right to enter the Olympics just as any other (introduced to me by Dan Wood). With the advent of new sports coming in, it makes me wonder two questions: #1 — Is there a capacity for the number of sports coming in? #2 — Will some sports be pushed out? There are certainly some sports that are gaining a fan base and viewership and other “old” sports that are losing engagement. What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments.

Angling as an Olympic sport? What would that look like? And who would be the big winners? We’ve just run a small story out of the USA, but it could go bigger, and we’re definitely going to take a closer look. The United States Angling Confederation reckons surf fishing could make its way onto the Olympics roster. And well, why not? (Hello to all you breakdancers out there) One thing that may not be certain, however, is whether such a move would boost angling participation. A quick Google tells me that the United Nations reckons winning medals drives up sporting participation in successful nations, but an academic study in Canada found exactly the opposite. The more medals Canadian athletes won in the winter and summer Olympics, the lower the rates of participation in sport in Canada. Meet L.A. and OC's Olympians headed to Paris 🏆 Los Angeles is still four years away from hosting the Olympics, but Southern California will see 39 of our best local athletes hit the world stage this month at the 2024 Paris Summer Games. Who is going? So far, 24 athletes from Los Angeles County, 13 from Orange County, and two from Riverside County have made Team USA’s roster for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The lineup includes a wide range of athletes, from professional sports players and Olympic gold-medalists to first-timers and college students. Many of SoCal’s iconic sports, like skating, surfing, and beach volleyball, are well represented. Backstory: The golden state is no stranger to Olympic glory. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, over half of the medals won by Team USA came from athletes with SoCal roots, according to NBC. This year’s local athletes join nearly 100 competitors from across the state, giving California the largest delegation on Team USA's roster. This year, 10,500 athletes will compete across 329 events to billions of viewers worldwide. Kayaking and breaking (commonly known as breakdancing) will debut, while surfing and skateboarding return for their second Olympics. Case: Italian Swimming Federation v. World Aquatics (CAS OG 24/18) 📅 Date: August 2024 ⚖️ Court: Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Ad Hoc Division - Paris Olympics Parties: - Applicant: Italian Swimming Federation - Respondent: World Aquatics - Interested Parties: Hungarian Water Polo Association, Italian Olympic Committee, International Olympic Committee 📝 Facts: 1. During a men's water polo quarterfinal match between Italy and Hungary at the Paris Olympics, Italian player Francesco Condemi took a shot that entered the goal but his hand struck a Hungarian player's face. 2. Referees reviewed the incident using VAR and ruled it a "violent action," disallowing the goal and excluding Condemi from the remainder of the game. 3. Hungary won the game after a penalty shootout. 4. Italy filed a protest, which was rejected by the referees and subsequently by World Aquatics' Jury of Appeal. 5. In a separate decision, World Aquatics' Management Committee decided not to impose additional game exclusions on Condemi, citing lack of malicious intent. 6. Italy appealed to CAS, seeking cancellation of sanctions against Condemi and replaying of the game from the incident point. 🔑 Key Issues: 1. Applicability of the Field of Play (FOP) Doctrine 2. Referee decisions can only be reviewed if there's evidence of bias, malice, bad faith, arbitrariness, or legal error. 4. Mere error in a referee's decision does not automatically qualify as arbitrary, irrational, or an abuse of discretion. 5. Russian lawmaker lauds Russian swimmers’ results at World Swimming Championship Russian swimmer won ten medals, including six gold and four silver ones MOSCOW, December 15/ Russian swimmers have demonstrated a brilliant result at the 2024 World Aquatics World Championship (25m) in Hungary, a Russian lawmaker told TASS. Russian swimmers won ten medals, including six gold and four silver ones. "This is a brilliant result. Our swimmers also set a lot of records. We fanned for them and supported them. These results will be a good example for other sports," Dmitry Svishchev, a member of the physical culture and sports committee of the Russian State Duma, or lower house of parliament, said. 2024 World Aquatics Championship (25m) A total of 27 Russian swimmers have been granted neutral status to participate in the 2024 World Aquatics Championship (25m), which is taking place in Budapest, Hungary, on December 10-15. According to the competition’s official website, "Swimmers from around 200 nations will compete in 45 events over six days of action. The World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) features an impressive $2.025 million prize purse and a $25,000 bonus for any World Record set at the Championships." In March 2023, World Aquatics (known as FINA until December 2022) decided to bar Russia and Belarus from participating in any future FINA-sanctioned international swimming events. Before the World Aquatics ruling in March 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations on February 28, 2022, advising international sports federations to exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in international tournaments. #business #finance #financialservices
