The FAIRY project, coordinated by INESC-ID and funded by OSCARS, a new Horizon Europe Grant, aims to enhance YEASTRACT+, a platform by ELIXIR, whose Portuguese node is hosted at BioData.pt. By investigating and storing yeast gene activity data, the project will help to improve yeast-based production methods towards a circular bioeconomy and speeding up finding new antifungal drug treatments. Led by Pedro Monteiro, researcher in the area of Automated Reasoning and Software Reliability (ARSR), the project started on November 1st, has a funding of €115K, and will last for 12 months in partnership with Instituto Superior Técnico. 🔗 To know more👇 https://lnkd.in/dKJ-usnR #Yeast #Bioeconomy #GeneResearch #HorizonEurope #INESCID

🚀📢 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭! We're thrilled to announce that our PacBio+Illumina hybrid assembly strategy has successfully produced a single, circularized contig for the 13.08-Mb genome of 𝘋𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘶𝘮 sp. This novel strain from the Sarawak forest can utilize natural or synthetic rubber as its sole carbon source. In collaboration with the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Nagaoka University of Technology, we've discovered three novel and unique latex clearing protein (lcp) genes and their genetic organization. Expressing these genes in 𝘌𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪 showed varying degrees of degrading activity against natural rubber. The genomic information and validation from this research provide a valuable reference for future characterization and engineering work. We're excited about the potential applications and further explorations this opens up! 🌿🔬 #Research #Genomics #Biotechnology #SyntheticBiology #Collaboration #Innovation #Sustainability #PacBio #Illumina #RubberDegradation #Bioinformatics #CoGen #CodonGenomics #Biologicaldatacompany

Do you want to read about our recent paper in Nature Communications (Nature Portfolio)? Lindlich's one and only Jan Lukas Krüsemann brings it to the point nicely. The full article can be read at https://lnkd.in/dUzc3WDG
📢 Microbial #fermentation just got an update! Proud to present: Controlled Respiro-Fermentation Why is this so cool? Here are some Highlights: 🙅🏻 Biochemistry constrains fermentation to a few #sugars that have to be sourced from arable land. Bulk microbial fermentations therefore compete with food production - an #ethical dilemma. ♻️ Through #SynBio and #MetabolicEngineering, we've freed fermentation from this limitation and can now use previously unfermentable industrial #WasteChemicals as feedstock. 🦠 This effort took over 6 years of Computational Modeling, Genetic Engineering and Prototyping. The final strain carries 19 (!) gene deletions, and is an outstanding example of tailoring metabolism to #industrial needs. 🤯 When the project started in Arren Bar-Even's group at the Max-Planck-Institut für Molekulare Pflanzenphysiologie, Steffen Lindner still worked in the lab and inserted the first gene deletions of the strain himself. Today he has his own research group at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and leads future projects harnessing the power of Respiro-Fermentation. 🤓 If you'd like to have a look at the original publication, check it out here: https://lnkd.in/dum4dAnk 🤨 Interested in understanding the idea of our approach but not enough time for a whole paper? Here's an article in Chemistry World: https://lnkd.in/dxes6uVp (thanks to Bradley van Paridon) 🤔 Not much knowledge about #biotechnology or redox biochemistry? Have a look at this paper spotlight 🇩🇪 in German: https://lnkd.in/dD6pTrMW 🏴 in English: https://lnkd.in/dBKY6M7P (Thank you Dr. Romy Greiner) 👥 This was a great team effort!
