InnerFight’s Post

Sir Dave Brailsford applied the term ‘marginal gains’ with the British cycling team, and in doing so, not only made a huge impact on the sport but also encouraged many of us to look for ‘1 percenters’ or ‘marginal gains’ in our own lives.  The theory is sound and, as Brailsford proved, it can work well in certain sports at particular moments. However, there are two fundamental flaws in applying this theory to the mass population.  Firstly, we are not operating in the same environment as the British cycling team, nor do we share the same goals. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Brailsford was seeking marginal gains because 90% of their foundation was already in place, which is far from the case for many of us when it comes to performance. How about we relax a bit on the marginal gains and, instead, focus on the other end of the spectrum—going after the big wins, which are usually the low-hanging fruit. Once that’s in order, we can then narrow the focus to more marginal improvements. Have a great week. No Weakness. Marcus Smith  #InnerFight #NoWeakness #TheInnerfightWay
