Greetings from “ The Scholar Box” Moving ahead in our sustainability journey, let us understand how combinations of value network actors' intentions and activities affect market change for a sustainable innovation. Sustainable development and the need to protect the possibilities of the present and future generations to meet their needs have created a great societal interest in supporting the development and diffusion of sustainable innovations. The diffusion of sustainable innovations into value networks facilitates and is facilitated by the change of markets towards sustainability; however, this interaction needs further investigation. The authors Outi Keränen, Tuula Lehtimäki , Hanna Komulainen and Pauliina Ulkuniemi examine how combinations of value network actors' intentions and activities affect market change for a sustainable innovation. The authors empirically explore market change related to introducing bioplastics into plastic food packaging value networks. They increase the understanding of market change for a sustainable innovation by showing how not only the actors with direct intentions to support the innovation but actors and activities indirectly related to the sustainable innovation contribute to market change. Such indirectly supportive activities focus on broader sustainability aims and can, for example, change market representations, practices, and norms in favor of the sustainable innovation. The authors propose sustainability layers to understand the diverse sustainability focuses of actors and their relation to the market change in question. Specifically, they contribute to market change literature by broadening the examination scope beyond the most active actors driving market change for innovation. The present study examines the market change for a sustainable innovation with a focus on a multitude of actors within an existing value network and their diverse intentions and activities connected to the market change. To gain theoretical understanding, literature on the intentions of market shapers and market are employed. Qualitative methods are used to examine a plastic food packaging value network, where bioplastic packaging is examined as an example of a sustainable innovation which wider diffusion requires market changes. The study contributes to the literature on sustainable innovation and market change by showing how the market change results from the diversity of value network actors' intentions and activities. The findings provide implications for firms developing and commercializing sustainable innovations to existing value networks where diverse actors' intentions collide. The need for a transition to the circular economy is urgent, and it also presents a tremendous business opportunity for companies that redesign products and services, reconfigure value chains, and engage in meaningful transformation of the systems in which they operate. Product innovation only addresses one part of the problem. Companies operate in a complex system that does not support seamless development, use, reuse, and recycling of redesigned products. Some companies are beginning to look at the systemic challenges, in addition to taking on product innovation. To make meaningful progress, companies need to better understand the full system and collaborate across the supply chain and across sectors. https://lnkd.in/dkupexeK #circulareconomy #recycle #responsiblebusiness #sharedvalue #supplychain #sustainability #environmentalimpact #carbonfootrpint #closedloop

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE MARKET MOVES FASTER THAN THE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT TIMELINES? Our job is to develop new products in line with market trends. But what happens if the market moves faster than the product development timelines? This is the challenge that R&D managers are facing currently, where certain trends that seemed established are shifting towards different directions, sometimes markedly different from the initial ones. Especially in the field of sustainability, we are seeing shifts away from initial projections towards more rational approaches: fewer slogans and more practicality. Bioplastics are giving way to recyclable plastics, and simplification of packaging is winning over the insistence on certain sustainability concepts that were heavily used in the past (greenwashing). Solutions? Personally, I foresee a revolution in production processes soon, enabling products to be released while they are still young! #packagingdesign #innovation #sustainability
