STRENGTHENING PARANA´S STI ECOSYSTEM: Insights from the 5th State Conference The 5th State Conference on Science, Technology, and Innovation in Paraná has become a pivotal platform for discussing strategies to enhance the region's STI ecosystem, attracting around 600 participants from academia, government, and the business sector. Held at the Federal Technological University of Paraná in Curitiba, the conference focused on "Justice, Sustainability, and Development," addressing key issues like research funding, researcher retention, and innovation in businesses. Parana´s budget for science, technology, and innovation has seen a significant increase, reaching R$ 708 million in 2023, funded by the Paraná Science and Technology Fund managed by the State Secretariat for Science, Technology, and Higher Education (Seti). The conference also served as a national forum for strategizing effective support systems for science, with federal investments in the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT) expected to reach R$ 12 billion in 2024. Participants had the opportunity to explore major STI projects through the Paraná Mais Ciência program, which operationalizes the application of the Paraná Fund according to the State's Multi-Year Plan (PPA). Discussions at the conference emphasized the newly approved Paraná State Policy on Science, Technology, and Innovation and the formation of research networks aimed at innovative solutions for societal benefit. Together with representatives of the Portuguese industrial sector, the director of Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS, Liliana Ferreira, will participate tomorrow (20 June) in a debate on the scientific and technological system. In addition to the director of FhP-AICOS, Braz Costa (Director General of CITEVE), Pedro Oliveira (Administrator of LEICA), and Jorge Laranjeira (Innovation Manager, MOLDIT Industries) will participate in the round table on the theme “Dialogue between Company Representatives and Representatives of the Scientific and Technological System.”   This session takes place as part of the "#Innovation and Science Week", an initiative organised by Famalicão City Council in partnership with COTEC Portugal, ANI | Agência Nacional de Inovação and CCDR NORTE, I.P.-Norte, and is part of the "Famalicão European Entrepreneurial Region 2024" programme with various activities to promote innovation and link #science and #ScientificKnowledge to the industrial context. Current initiatives, research needs, and development measures related to the #digital_twin were the subject of a workshop organized by the #ProdE #ProfileArea last week, attended by around 50 colleagues from various departments and institutes of RWTH Aachen University. Under the dedicated leadership of Professor Thomas Bergs, spokesperson for the profile area, and excellently moderated by co-organizer and profile area ProdE member Professor Frank Piller, an inspiring atmosphere quickly developed among the participants. Short presentations by Prof. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Wegener, Vice President of External Cooperation at Siemens, Philipp Ganser from Gemineers, Prof. Tobias Kleinert from IAT der RWTH Aachen University, and Moritz Frieges from PEM at RWTH Aachen provided the right impetus. The digital twin can make an important contribution to the design of sustainable value chains for the circular economy. Given the urgency of research on the digital twin, for example, within the framework of the EU's digitalization initiatives and the introduction of digital product passports, it offers an ideal information basis. The goal of the half-day workshop was to compile all current research and development activities on the digital twin at RWTH Aachen that benefit production. Based on this assessment, the existing competence profile and overarching research and development needs were identified, which will now serve as the basis for interdisciplinary follow-up activities. By the end of the day, several key findings had emerged from the workshop: At the Aachen research location, we already have outstanding prerequisites for the further development of the digital twin. More interdisciplinary exchange and transfer formats are needed to network the diversity of skills in the best possible way, pool expertise across faculties, and combine specialized knowledge. Last but not least, a declared goal of the workshop participants was to bring the applications of the digital twin to life and accelerate the transfer to industry. The ProdE profile area will now consolidate the results and determine what needs to be implemented.

Yesterday, we had a productive meeting with the Brazilian delegation from #SENAI at #FraunhoferIPK and our new #FraunhoferISI office in #Berlin. We continued discussions on the impact assessment of the SENAI Innovation Institutes Network and its contributions to Brazil’s economic development. This is the right approach also to valorize the big job done by ENEA with particular regards to the Lithium cooling system in WPENS in the past years which the effective plant could finalize its knowledge but also an opportunity for italian industry to partecipate to the construction phase.

IVA – Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien, are now seeking candidates for the 2024 list, the sixth edition, with the theme "Innovation through Interdisciplinarity – Technology in the Service of Humanity." Researchers and research teams based in the fields of technology or economics at Swedish universities or research institutes are encouraged to apply. Candidates should be working interdisciplinarily to solve pressing societal problems and enhance the competitiveness of the industry. Research projects should leverage knowledge, perspectives, and methods from multiple scientific disciplines to find innovative solutions to complex problems.
