🌿 Excited to share insights from our recent research on Effluent Reuse for Agriculture using an integrated Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor with a trickling filter system. We conducted a 30-day study during the dry season, analyzing effluent quality for parameters like BOD, COD, TSS, heavy metals, E. coli, and helminth eggs. The UASB-TF system showed high removal rates—80.5% for COD, 82.9% for BOD₅, and 80.9% for TSS—meeting national discharge standards. However, elevated levels of chromium, nitrate-nitrogen, and helminth eggs posed risks for agricultural reuse. Industrial sewage discharge also impacted treatment efficiency. Our study emphasizes the need for additional treatment, such as constructed wetlands, to ensure safe effluent reuse in agriculture. 📄 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ejiThu-S

Nature doesn’t need fertilizer and other synthetic inputs to grow food. Why can’t commercial agriculture grow anything without it? It’s because our soils are missing the biology, the microbial life. On this test plot I am comparing yields when we add the microbial life back in the form of a compost extract. #moraleats #regenerativeagriculture #johnsonsubioreactor #johnsonsu

One of the most innovative approaches of #MEDIBEES is how to use #byproducts from the hive, i.e. "waste" as fertilizer in agriculture. This fits perfectly into our aim to provide for #sustainable #beekeeping in the #Mediterranean: Organic material like debris from the colonies provide nutrients, improve the structure of the soil, and enhance the water absorption. The different substrates (debris from the bottom board, remains after melting down combs...) have been tested and analysed in the lab. Currently, our colleague Dr. José Antonio López Pérez is testing the different doses he found in the lab in the field.

VERMICOMPOSTING:: This workshop was organized from 27 NOVEMBER 2023 to 2 DECEMBER 2023 by the SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE. DEV BHOOMI UTTRAKHAND UNIVERSITY Vermicompost is created through vermicomposting, a process that involves using earthworms to compost organic waste. Surface-dwelling earthworms, such as African earthworms, red worms, and composting worms, are preferred for vermicompost production. To apply vermicompost, sprinkle it near the root zone of plants and water the plants to mix it with the soil.
