Undertaking effective and meaningful public engagement starts with a better understanding of what public engagement actually is – and what it isn't! It's amazing to see so many Councils pushing for increased engagement as a strategic priority, and Admin teams looking for the same in support of their work. That said, there is sometimes a misconception of what constitutes meaningful engagement. Sadly, "Engagement" has become a bit of a buzz word as a result. So, as part of our new weekly series aimed at dispelling local government buzz words, we figured "Engagement" is the perfect place to start: 🔹 Engagement: A defined process by which you are getting valuable community input that can bear an actual impact on the decision-making process or in operational service/program delivery. Hopefully, this definition helps create a baseline for what you're looking at when considering public engagement. It is the foundation for the path we take in designing, executing and analyzing these processes (supported, of course, by our Engagement With Intent Framework). We've had the pleasure of working with countless municipalities over the years on engagement efforts large and small. Through these many efforts, we can confidently confirm that approaching the process with meaning, intention, and sound strategy will help build community trust, and will prove incredibly valuable to Council and Administration! A couple of interesting stats in the Capire Consulting Group recent Engagement Compass survey results caught my attention: - Over 80% of respondents had online engagement embedded in their community engagement processes - Only just over 40% of respondents thought the engagement tools meet the participation needs of the community Some of the other feedback about engagement process weaknesses included: - the depth of engagement is too shallow - not enough diversity in the participants  - the need to break down the barriers for underserviced community members to participate -  the need to update engagement tools and important industry resources so they are more relevant to today’s expectations and minimise participant fatigue from ‘rinse and repeat’ approaches This begs the question - is our industry's love affair with (and perhaps over reliance on) quick-and-easy online engagement tools over?
