A tip worth knowing for protocols.
International Conference Moderator | Lawyer | LinkedIn Top Voice | Award-winning Public speaker and trainer | Influencer
When a Governor, Honourable Minister and Former President of Nigeria are attending an event, what’s the the order of protocol or recognition? First of all, all the 3 people should be accorded a lot of respect because of their offices and roles. However, when it comes to observing protocol at public functions, here’s the order of recognition in this context: 1. First, you recognise the Former President. 2. Secondly, you recognize the Governor. 3. Thirdly, you recognize the Honourable Minister. Wondering why the Former President takes precedence in this context? Former Presidents are accorded a lot of respect because of their previous position. Even after they leave office, they retain the title of the highest honour In Nigeria i.e "GCFR" which stands for "Grand Commander of the Federal Republic." They also retain their official titles, such as "His Excellency” or “Her Excellency” and are entitled to certain privileges. Offices that takes precedence in recognition before a Former President, nationally are those of the top five leaders of the Country, namely: a. President, b. Vice President c. Senate President d. Speaker of the House of Representatives e. Chief Justice of Nigeria. While this order of protocol seems to be customary in national events, I found a Bill online called National Order of Precedence of Public Officers and other Persons Bill 2000 which provides a written guide for protocol in public functions. Unfortunately, I was unable to confirm whether the Bill was signed into an Act. It doesn’t seem to be in the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN). If you have any useful information on this Bill or any related Law, please feel free to share in the comment box. Did you learn something new? 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐆𝐎𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐌𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐚 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭. There are many people that ask, what made Dr. Levy Mwanawasa tick? Why is he considered by many as the best President Zambia has ever had. The reason why that is so is simple; Mwanawasa had clarity of purpose. When he assumed office on January, 2, 2002, his first task was to draft a mission statement for his Presidency. The themes in the mission statement would define the sort of President he wanted to be and the values he would uphold. He didn’t just stop there; he stuck his mission statement in his office to consistently remind himself of the onerous task bestowed on him by the people of Zambia and the expectations he needed to meet. A common spectacle in President Mwanawasa’s office was not only its grandeur but the mission statement which read; ”𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗭𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗮, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱, 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻, 𝗜 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳…𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗭𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗭𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆, 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹, 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿, 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝘂𝘁𝘆.” How many of us have created a mission statement for ourselves as CEO’S, Managers, Pastors, Husbands, Wives and so on? How many of us are clear about what our goals are and the values/behaviors we will have to adopt to achieve them? A mission statement isn’t just a preserve for Presidents like Mwanawasa, but it is a preserve for all of us. Therefore, I have made it a personal resolve to create my own mission statement, one that I will glance over on a regular basis to remind myself about what is truly important in my life and if you haven’t, I hope you too can embark on this exercise for yourself, for your family and the nation.
