Iraqi Environment, Water security , and governance has a different meaning after these set of workshops hosted by IRIS Some key takeaways were that -We understood the massive impact of infodemic especially when it comes to environmental issues in Iraq and the necessity to go back to source of the sources to validate information -I got a deeper insight by ministers themselves on why some high potential projects are not meant to be continued -To assess a conflict we need to understand it on the historical, and personal level of involved parties not only geographic and political aspects -Before we blame external parties for our problems we need to check if this issue is internal from the first place and instead of blaming internal parties then we need to understand the needs that Led them to this and work on it ( Root work rather than surface and drama cycle work ) -Empowering youth to speak up and to Take the right actions is crucial in a country nearly 60% of it’s population made of youth -Tribal power is no a joke, and for the moment we need to carry out social marketing to convince people into the choices that goes to everyone’s best interest including themsleves first Finally I’m really greatful and highly enlightened by this program and Looking forward to translate the new knowledge gained back into tangible actions .
The Youth for Accountability in Environmental Governance (YAEG) program piloted by the Institute of Regional and International Studies (IRIS) is a unique opportunity to enable young Iraqi leaders to engage in accountability mechanisms in water and environmental governance. This policy brief for the first workshop of the program, written by Dr. Zmkan Saleem, myself, and Dr. J. Mac Skelton, tries to identify gaps and challenges, explain the state of government interagency coordination, and explore avenues for youth engagement in accountability in the complex Iraqi environmental governance system.
