Mo Kamara noticed something when starting his onsite placement during university: he was the only Black person. He saw it as an opportunity to tell his story and learn the misconceptions of being the “odd one out”. How? By joining the equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) forum at Dyer & Butler, running awareness campaigns and raising money for charity. Let’s talk about philanthropic redlining and the racial funding gap on Giving Tuesday. The attack on diversity, equity, and inclusion is also impacting non-profit organizations, as we are now seeing grants exclude organizations and programs like Black Connect that focus on elevating and economically empowering the Black community. While we have been working to neutralize systemic barriers, others have been working just as hard to maintain the status quo and ensure that opportunities and resources that flow to the Black community remain scarce. For over five years, Black Connect has been a trailblazer in the fight to close the racial wealth gap in America and empower Black entrepreneurs. Our impact has been transformative—but we need your support to continue this essential work. Black Connect faces “philanthropic redlining,” a systemic lack of funding for Black-led organizations, especially Black Connect, which seeks to upset the status quo and achieve economic equality for Black Americans. With foundations and major donors withholding financial support we’ve been left to navigate this landscape with few resources. This racial funding gap can be seen in many ways: Budget size: Black-led organizations have smaller budgets than white-led organizations. Access to funding: Black-led organizations lack access to funding from major donors and foundations. Corporate donations: White-led organizations are more likely to receive corporate donations and in higher amounts than Black-led organizations. Leadership: Organizations led by Black women receive the least amount of funding. Why Your Help Matters Black-owned businesses are crucial to building generational wealth. Through programs & initiatives we’re helping entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses and thrive in a system designed to exclude them. Did you know Black mothers in the U.S. are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white mothers? Even after giving birth, Black women face a wage gap, earning just 50 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. This persistent inequity stems from systemic racism, economic injustice, and limited access to quality healthcare. At Get In the Game, we believe in educating and empowering young leaders to recognize and challenge these real-world inequities. Join us in driving meaningful change. ➡️ Learn more and support our mission by donating: getinthegame.org/donate

Pride Month is right around the corner, and straight-led organizations flock to the closest queer person or nonprofit to put on an event to attract LGBTQIA+ people to their cause. 🙋♀️ While the intentions are good, most of these organizations don’t even have queer people on their board, or collect LGBTQIA+ data, or even know where to find them…. And that’s ok! It’s a lot to learn and we appreciate your efforts. 🫶 But it’s time to do more and do better. You can start your journey here! 🤩 ✍️My article “Get Q’d In: Advance Your Mission By Engaging LGBTQIA+ Donors” is now available online via Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP Global)’s Advancing Philanthropy! 🤓 💡The article is your guide on quick tips for long-term engagement from one of the most sought-after communities. 👀 🏳️🌈Take your feel-good one-off Pride events and turn your efforts into a sustainable constituency of the most loyal people you’ll ever engage. 🔄 💬After you read it, sound off in the comments — what more do you want to know? Did you know? Black households donate a higher share of their wealth than white households. African American families have—more than any other racial group—contributed the largest portion of their wealth to charity. According to a report by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Black households give 25% more of their income annually than white households, and nearly two-thirds of African-American households donate to organizations and causes, totaling $11 billion each year. This statistic is notable because of the racial wealth gap that puts African Americans significantly behind other racial groups. According to research from the Urban Institute, the average white man earns $2.7 million over a lifetime, while the average Black man earns $1.8 million and the average Hispanic man earns $2.0 million. Despite this gap, Black households continue to prioritize giving. At Redstart Creative, we are inspired by the generosity and resilience of Black communities and are committed to supporting organizations that make a difference. #BlackPhilanthropy #Community #RedstartCreative #BlackExcellence #WealthGap #NonProfit #BaltimorePrintShop #CertifiedWomenOwned #PrintMarketing #DigitalMarketing #CommunityOutreach #SmallBusinessBranding #MarylandNonProfits #BaltimoreNonProfits

💡 Philanthropic redlining perpetuates the discriminatory practice of unfairly distributing philanthropic funds while disregarding justice-centered Black-led institutions. Fueled by prejudiced beliefs that Black-led organizations are ineffective, inferior, and fraudulent, this practice has historically marginalized Black communities, depriving them of equitable access to philanthropic support and a voice in resource allocation. Rooted in the erroneous notion that solutions for Black communities must come from white-led nonprofits, philanthropic redlining fosters the misconception that all Black-led nonprofits lack the capacity to fulfill their missions. 👉 We reject the notion of 'capacity building,' recognizing it as a product of philanthropic redlining and a narrative that unfairly portrays Black-led nonprofits as inherently deficient. ✨ Our approach is grounded in envisioning success through partnerships with Black-led nonprofits. We engage these organizations by seeking their insights on what success looks and feels like to them and what resources they require to achieve it. Additionally, we inquire about how best to support them in navigating philanthropic culture. #philanthropy #philanthropicredlining #racialequity #blackledleadership
