New PACE brief by Benjamin Cottingham and Alix Gallagher, part of a series on California Education Partners, describes a new approach to collaboration on improving mathematics instruction in California school districts. The collaboration between Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and Ed Partners centered on capacity building in math instruction and creating a collaborative system for refining instructional strategies. Students in the pilot school, Sierra House Elementary, who received instruction from participating teachers showed improvement in math assessment scores as compared to districtwide scores. This case study highlights the role of strong instructional leadership and strategic resource allocation in building adult capacity, improving instructional strategies, and scaling changes throughout the district. https://lnkd.in/gAUTZpei

“Every student has the potential to be a math person when math is made more inclusive.” - Lacey Robinson Inclusive math instruction helps every learner thrive by: - Building Confidence: Breaking the myth that math is only for the ‘gifted’ and fostering a culture where all students feel capable of success. - Real-World Connections: Making math relevant by linking it to everyday contexts, so students understand its value. - Diverse Approaches: Incorporating varied strategies to engage learners from all backgrounds, ensuring everyone finds a way to connect with math. When math is inclusive, every student gains the skills and confidence to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. https://hubs.la/Q02Yrtyy0 Want to bring math that speaks every student’s language to your classrooms? A Stanford study of a novel high school math initiative shows promising effects: Ninth graders at the Sequoia Union High School District who struggled in math but took Algebra 1 with peers at grade level went on to earn higher test scores than students who had been placed into a remedial course. Teachers were equipped through an intensive professional development program to support all students in a mixed-level classroom. “This study is a nationally relevant proof point of what high expectations and instructional differentiation in the classroom can achieve,” said GSE Professor Thomas Dee, who conducted the research with Elizabeth Huffaker, PhD ’24. Additionally, Professor Guillermo Solano-Flores investigated the pathways available to English learners, revealing underrepresentation in college-eligible courses even among those who had already taken Algebra 1 in middle school. Chief Academic Officer at Coney Island Prep
3moWe used Instruction Partners’ framework in our most recent math adoption at Coney Island Prep and, as a small organization, were able to include every HS math teacher and some families in the selection process. When the team was torn between two high-quality options, the teachers opted to teach sample lessons to their students and give them a chance to weigh in. Building so much investment through the process meant we started the year with teachers and coaches who were excited to hit the ground running. 10/10 would recommend!
