Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)(工業技術研究院, 工研院) and Global Partners Discuss Open RAN at 5G Summit 2024 At the 5G Summit, Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)(工業技術研究院, 工研院), alongside global partners, outlined key steps to advance Open RAN. Highlights: ▪️ A new partnership with the UK’s Digital Catapult to accelerate Open RAN through testbeds like SONIC Labs, focusing on interoperability and scalable deployment. ▪️ Collaborative efforts with partners like National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) (US) and i14y Lab (Germany) to support reliable testing environments for Open RAN. ▪️ Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has supported 27 Taiwanese companies in Open RAN testing, with 8 receiving TIP badges for their mature solutions. These initiatives are paving the way for the future of Open RAN technology globally. NTIA accepted industry comments on shareholders’ visions of 6G wireless technology. Commenters tended to say that there is still significant innovation being developed with current 5G technology and some said it is still unclear what the use cases for 6G will be. 🤔 Reflecting on 5G: What’s Next for 6G? A decade ago, I was asked about the five fundamental enabling technologies that would elevate 5G as a superior mobile communication system. These technologies were expected to revolutionize connectivity, speed, and reliability. Fast forward to today, while 5G has brought significant advancements, it has not fully met the lofty expectations set for it. Interestingly, these same technologies are now being proposed for 6G, aiming to finally achieve the transformative impact we envisioned. Is 6G the future? As we look ahead, it’s clear that 6G will be the next leap in mobile communications, building on the foundations laid by 5G and pushing the boundaries even further.
