The sedentarization of Baka Pygmies in Cameroon has led to a significant change in their dietary habits. They have reduced their reliance on wild foods and now depend more on agriculture. Our recent study has shown that their diet lacks diversity and does not provide enough nutrients. The shift in dietary patterns highlights the complex interplay of socioeconomic, environmental, and cultural factors. Therefore, holistic strategies are needed to improve the health and well-being of the Baka Pygmy population and ensure their survival in the face of ongoing changes: https://lnkd.in/e6aFvXka

KIPPRA Kenya in collaboration with Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) will on 21st November 2024 launch the National Information Platform for Food Security and Nutrition (NIPFN) policy research papers. The policy research papers focus on drivers of stunting reduction in Kenya, the cost of a nutritious school meal in Kenya, relationship between drought early warning system information and food and nutrition security in Kenya among others. The launch will be presided over by Principal Secretary, State Department for Economic Planning, Mr. James Muhati. The National Information Platform for Food and Nutrition (NIPFN) has played a pivotal role in advancing efforts to strengthen food security and nutrition in Kenya. By providing timely, reliable data and in-depth analysis, the platform supports policymakers, government agencies, and development partners in making informed, evidence-based decisions. NIPFN is an initiative of the European Commission with support from the United Kingdom Department for International Development and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 📢 OUT NOW: Systematic review on the impacts of agricultural interventions on food security and nutrition in complex humanitarian emergency settings. We're happy to share that Melodie Al Daccache, Berthe Abi Zeid, Leila Hojeij, Ghassan Baliki, Tilman Brück, and Hala Ghattas’ newest paper has been published in BMC Nutrition. In it, they dive into the #literature on agricultural interventions to find out if their positive effects on #FoodSecurity holds in complex emergency settings. The goal? To find articles that apply rigorous designs to assess the causal impacts of agricultural interventions on food security, nutrition, or health outcomes in complex humanitarian emergencies. The result? They only find six articles matching these criteria, which have mixed results on dietary diversity and food security, and little evidence on child nutrition. SLARI in partnership with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (llTA), the Directorate of Food Nutrition of the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) host a one-day consultative workshop on Advocacy Efforts for the Generation of National Food Consumption and Micronutrients Databases for Sierra Leone at SLARI Headquarters. The project is a one-year grant from the Micronutrient Initiative (DInA) to undertake an Advocacy effort for the Generation of National Food Consumption and micronutrient databases for Sierra Leone. In this new paper, with kwabena nyarko addai and Omphile Temoso, we used unique data from Ghana and a "battery of econometric models" to determine the impact of farmer organization (FO) membership on food and nutrition security among rural rice farmers. Agrocrops Participates in Global Efforts Against Malnutrition at VAMP Conference Agrocrops participated in the VAMP (Variétale pour l'Amélioration des Matières Premières) program in Madagascar, emphasising the importance of balanced fatty acids and protein quality in ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) for combating severe acute malnutrition. The event gathered 34 stakeholders from 13 countries, focusing on observing high oleic peanut trials, including varieties developed by Dr. Naveen Puppala, to identify RUTF-adapted varieties. Insights from trials conducted in seven countries, including Haiti, Guinea, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, were shared, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of RUTF-adapted varieties.  Agrocrops presentation highlighted support for local value chains to drive socio-economic impact and reduce the carbon footprint, underscoring the global commitment to addressing malnutrition effectively. Agrocrops practical approach to do commercial farming of the high oleic peanuts (HOPE) was well an recognised in the program.
