Last week, CIEL and partners were in Brazil for the second and final round of hearings for the Inter-American Court of Human Rights’ Advisory Opinion on the climate emergency and human rights. During these hearings, the Court heard testimony from Indigenous Peoples and environmental human rights defenders from Latin America and the Caribbean about the risks they face. We were honored to present our arguments about the role of defenders along with Vecinas Unidas por la Defensa de un Ambiente Sano (VUDAS), PLATAFORMA INTERNACIONAL CONTRA LA IMPUNIDAD, International Service for Human Rights, FARN, Derecho, Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, AIDA - Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense, Fundeps Argentina, and other partners. We urged the judges to recognize and protect those who defend human rights and the planet in their Advisory Opinion. Read our key arguments:

The first Annual Report from California’s Multibenefit Land Repurposing Program came out this week and it’s exciting to see growing capacity and collaboration to support water sustainability in California. MLRP brings needed funds to high-priority and critically overdrafted basins, enhancing resilience by repurposing the least-viable agricultural lands in ways that support local needs including protecting communities and the environment.

Congratulations grant recipients! 🎇 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (#EPA) selected 38 organizations to receive over $3.6 million through the Environmental Education Grants Program. Organizations with environmental education activities and programs are provided between $50,000 to $100,000. Grantees activities span 28 states and the Republic of Palau, America Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (#CNMI), and #Guam. The Ohio EPA can assist your community in educating residents and businesses through grants of up to $50,000. Environmental education activities covered by the grant include a variety of topics and actions such as hosting webinars and workshops, field trips that highlight best environmental management practices, and developing curriculum and websites.
