✅Mentally healthy people are able to: • Communicate their thoughts & feelings • Accept & give affection & compliments • Get along and cooperate with others • Listen to and respect those around them • Control their impulses • Tolerate some anxiety and frustration • Take responsibility for actions • Not blaming others • Accept disappointments • Use positive coping skills with stressors 💠What causes Mental Illness? ◽Physical factors: illness, disability or even aging process make mental illness worse. Substance abuse or intoxication from alcohol/drugs may mask mental illness. A person with brain injury end up with personality, cognition, mood, and behavior changes. Chemical imbalances (neurotransmitters) and hormonal changes also linked. ◽Environmental & Genetic factors: some research indicate that exposure to certain viruses, chemicals may lead mental issues. Traumatic experiences such being in combat or experiencing sexual abuse and family history also linked. ◽Stress factors: traumatic events, poor interpersonal relationships, difficult loss such as loss of a job or pet or loved ones can lead to mental illness. =If a person has positive coping skills, they will better deal with changes once experiencing physical illness/disability. 💠What are Types of Mental Illness? ◽Anxiety disorders: group of disorders which people feel anxious, frightened, distressed, or terrified more excessive than normal situation. Anxiety can lead people to become depressed, have low self-esteem, abuse substances, and have suicidal thoughts. Anxiety disorders are very common and also very treatable it includes Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, Obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. ◽Depression: common type of mental illness, involve extreme sadness, insomnia, trouble concentrating, over or under-eating, substance abuse, guilt, and thoughts of suicide. It often results in disruption of a person's ability to function normally which may have trouble getting out of bed, self-care, caring for others, or doing duties. It is very treatable. If it left untreated, it could result in suicide, which ranked 10th leading cause of death in USA. ◽Schizophrenia: serious mental illness that impacts ability to think clearly, make decisions, have relationships with others, manage emotions, and function everyday. They have psychoses (loss of contact with what is real), including delusions or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things not real). Delusions may demonstrate paranoia (thinking someone is out to hurt you). A person with schizophrenia may also have sleeping/eating problems, an inability to relate to others. They have very high risk of suicide. With medication, psychiatrist/ therapist support, they regain function. =A common form of treatment focuses on how person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are related. They are taught to recognize negative self-talk into more positive ones. #WorkingwithMentalIllnesses
