I'm excited about the growing focus on live experiences. Experiential marketing is booming across all sectors, from major players like The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Discovery investing billions in their theme parks to mid-size organizations like Gibson, Inc. with its sensorial retail experience 'Gibson's Garage' and, even, restaurant pop-up charts. In-person experiences are accelerating, and many of them are undoubtedly creative and fun to interact with as a customer. However, it's important to integrate this into your strategy without relying solely on it. The common thread among these successes is that they're built around an IP or franchise, which spans multiple mediums—film, TV, podcasts, events, books, Social, and even VR/AR experiences. For the past five years, I've been championing the idea that commercial real estate developers and F&B operators can thrive as entertainment providers. This year's #ICSC conference confirmed that 'entertainment' is a hot topic, with discussions covering family entertainment centers, socially competitive bars, and immersive experiences—all under the expansive entertainment umbrella. It's important to be specific about what I'm promoting. I'm advocating for a distinct entertainment category: 'Hyper-Experiential Entertainment.' This concept blends creativity and innovation from TV, concerts, film, stage, theme parks, and cruise lines to create exceptional entertainment experiences for retail and F&B sectors. The ‘Hyper-Experiential’ approach leverages extensive experience across various entertainment genres to craft bespoke teams and strategies for each project. This agile method draws unique combinations of techniques, talent, and resources from a vast toolbox, fusing them together to create one-of-a-kind outcomes. Additionally, this approach allows developers and operators to develop their own IP instead of licensing existing ones, providing full control and flexibility over content. This not only ensures exclusivity and adaptability but also enhances the value and competitive edge of their offerings. Unlike one-size-fits-all solutions, this approach acknowledges that each venue, audience, and project is unique and deserves a highly customized strategy. Refusing to standardize creativity empowers developers and operators to stand out and set new industry standards. Early adopters are already implementing this strategy. Merging cross-entertainment industry talent and resources with retail and F&B developers and operators is generating creative sparks that are about to become infernos. Why do I love the entertainment business? Simple: it’s all about bringing people together in ways that resonate, thrill, and inspire.
