The The Washington Post just sent me an offer to read their digital edition for $1 per month. And earlier today as I opened the The Guardian to look for a running story that someone had told me about, the screen was obscured by a pop-up asking me to sign up for €3.31 per week to received the Guardian Weekly magazine plus access to the digital news (which is free, but that is beside the point). The New York Times is asking for £19.99 for a year's access to the online news site (which jumps up to £89.99 per year in the second year). And the Financial Times wants £369 per year for access to everything it publishes through its iOS app. What strikes me about all these offers, is that they represent incredibly good value. As it happens, I don't read the news very often - I limit myself to an hour or two per week. A few years ago I decided that my news consumption was getting out of control. The constant doom was really impacting my mental state. So I massively restricted the amount of news I read. That doesn't detract from the fact that through the work we do at Like the Wind magazine, I have some sort of idea of what it must take to produce a daily newspaper. Or these days, keep a digital version up-to-date 24/7 whilst also carrying out investigative journalism. The task is undoubtedly massive. All the parts that make up storytelling - journalism, creative writing, photography, illustration, editing, sub-editing, layout design and so on - are skills that should not be underestimated. And the people who do them are really talented. Despite that it seems as though fewer and fewer people want to pay for the end result of all that work. And I wonder what happens if titles like those I have mentioned, simply run out of money? I think that is a rather scary prospect. Or do you disagree?

How are you preserving your content? When news sites’ archives disappear, readers aren’t the only ones who lose out — there are all kinds of personal and professional challenges for journalists, too. They’re left to archive their work on their own, so that they have clips to show the next job. Web pages, photographs, and text stories are easier to save than audio files, interactives, and other types of digital journalism; to preserve those, journalists often have to get creative. Paid personal archiving services are available, but “it’s not necessarily appealing when you’re just trying to look for a way to save something that was previously online for free,” one journalist told me. https://lnkd.in/dKHcb5eS

New Work Cutting Through the Noise of Digital Journalism Digital editorial platform Weekly Tales is dedicated to documenting the nuances of people and place. Whether it’s a deep dive into overlooked local history and repurposed community spaces or explorations of critical social movements, Weekly Tales tells the stories of the interested and interesting. Due to the complexity and pace of their pieces, however, Weekly Tales needed a clear brand refresh and comprehensive digital platform to manage the broadening scope of the platform, into the worlds of photo book publishing and documentary filmmaking. They turned to In-Col Studio to deliver as much. The intention of this latest update has been to reflect the design tropes of traditional and contemporary news, whilst creating a unique space in the middle ground that Weekly Tales could occupy. An updated ident is centred around parentheses, which act as a subtle and apt way to enclose additional information, relating very much to the role Weekly Tales aims to play in journalism, via reporting stories that often go under the radar. As a result of using the humble parentheses, the system created is flexible in execution, shifting focus between quality photography and in-depth reportage with ease. Within Weekly Tales, there are three components (Weekly, Studio and Published) and so the wordmark lockups are created within this simple approach, providing a refined clarity. #design #branding #webdesign #editorial #slowjournalism #creativeagency

✏ Here's another finished project from my Journalism 4180: Newsroom Content Creation course! Below is an infographic about planning a green burial in Missouri that I made using Adobe InDesign and graphics from Canva. A "green burial' is a funeral practice that prohibits the use of embalming fluid and metal caskets; pine boxes, shrouds and other biodegradable materials are used as alternatives. This project was one that really stuck with me. I chatted with Thomas May (owner of H.T. May and Sons Funeral Home), Bill Goddard (co-owner of Green Acres Cemetery) and Stephanie Dresen (Board Secretary for the Green Burial Council). Initially, I wanted to find out more about what a green burial was and what this practice does for the environment. I quickly learned that there was more to green burials. In fact, there aren't many studies that have been done to see what impact this type of burial has on the earth outside of anecdotal evidence. When I interviewed Goddard, May, and Dresen, they all said that, in their experience, the practice of green burials was hugely beneficial for families and friends grieving their loved ones. Additionally, the lower costs associated with green burials alleviated the stress of these families. I got to collaborate with Mercy Austin, Simone McCandless, Logan Morris, and Luka Turanjanin to create a full, multimedia story package. Thank you all for being so amazing to work and learn with! If I could redo this project, I would remind myself of these things: -Canva is also industry standard and a bit more beginner friendly than InDesign. -Leave your presuppositions about a subject at the door of an interview (and use Google Scholar when you're researching beforehand)! -Make sure that all of your color swatches match when you're doing them. Writing the color codes into your outline is best!
