International Confederation of Midwives (ICM)’s Post

🌍📢 Strengthening midwives' roles in maternity and newborn care can save millions of lives each year while significantly enhancing women’s overall experience of care. The World Health Organization, in collaboration with UNICEF, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and ICM, has released the landmark 'Transitioning to Midwifery Models of Care: A Global Position Paper.' This paper emphasises the benefits of midwifery models of care, where midwives serve as primary healthcare providers during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. When discussing the importance of this position paper, ICM’s Chief Executive, Sally Pairman, stated: “We are so excited to have worked closely on writing and launching the Global Position Paper on Midwifery Models of Care, helping to ensure that every woman in the world is able to receive care from an educated, autonomous professional midwife. We encourage countries to implement continuity of midwife care into their health systems as a cost-effective way to improve health and well-being.” This is a milestone achievement for midwifery worldwide. Let’s continue advocating for the implementation of midwifery care models across the globe! Read the paper now: https://ow.ly/RJXL50U2Uyn

The drive to strengthen the midwives role and it's obvious effects on the child bearing family is quite challenging in regions where staff shortages persist. Midwifery organizations and governments as well as training institutions and health care facilities have to join forces in order for this to be achieved.
