Today is international #mangroveday and we're happy to share with you a new report on carbon stock in mangrove ecosystem! Mangroves provide various ecosystem services, including coastal protection, fishery nursery habitats, and carbon sequestration. The potential of mangroves to store carbon is five times greater than that of tropical rainforests. The Subnational Climate Fund (SCF) Technical Assistance commissioned a study to evaluate carbon stock in Mangrove ecosystems in Central Kalimantan in #Indonesia. The report was written by EcoNusa Foundation and the Indonesian Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (CCMRS-IPB). Co-Leading the Drivers and Capture Fisheries chapters  (#4 & #15), MarFishEco identified key factors driving marine changes. 🌐 The Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment: The WOA emerges from The Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects. Established after the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, this global mechanism is committed to the regular review of environmental, economic, and social aspects of the world's oceans. 🚨 Warning Signals and Urgent Action: The first WOA in 2015 raised alarms about the degradation of ocean areas due to human activities.  The second WOA, including MarFishEco's contributions, reiterated that the situation has not improved. It underlined the oceans' diminishing capacity to sustain human activities, urging global cooperative action to protect these invaluable resources. 🌍 Addressing Knowledge Gaps for Ocean Sustainability: MarFishEco and the team identified knowledge gaps through the WOA II, guiding governments in mitigating degradation and reversing the negative impacts on the world's oceans. Today, I had the honor of speaking at the Economic Committee of the Israeli Knesset about new regulations that prohibit dumping waste from vessels into the sea. These new regulations mark a significant step towards preventing marine pollution and preserving Israel's marine ecosystems. The primary objective of these regulations is to reduce marine pollution and safeguard the health of our marine environment and diverse marine life. According to the regulations, it is forbidden to discharge waste from vessels into the sea, thus ensuring a clean and healthy marine environment. I am proud to be part of the effort to preserve our marine environment and address the ongoing ecological challenge. I believe that through collective effort involving the public, government, and civil society, we can make positive changes and maintain a healthy environment for future generations. I support the High Seas Treaty! High Seas Alliance officially known as the BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) Treaty! This agreement is structured around four key pillars: marine genetic resources (MGRs), including questions on the sharing of benefits; area-based management tools (ABMTs), including marine protected areas; environmental impact assessments (EIAs); and capacity building and the transfer of marine technology. This treaty is particularly beneficial for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as it addresses several of their unique challenges. The MGRs pillar ensures equitable access to and sharing of benefits from marine genetic resources, providing SIDS with opportunities for innovation and economic development (creation and advancement of the biotech industry). ABMTs, including marine protected areas, help conserve critical marine ecosystems that SIDS rely on for food security, tourism, and coastal protection. EIAs ensure that the environmental impacts of activities in ABNJ are assessed, preventing activities that could harm marine environments vital to SIDS livelihoods and culture. One key benefit for SIDS is capacity building and technology transfer which will enable SIDS to participate effectively in marine conservation and sustainable use, thereby enhancing their resilience and sustainable development. It is time to RATIFY the BBNJ as it supports the sustainable development of SIDS; promoting environmental health, economic opportunities, and global cooperation. #BBNJ #HighSeasTreaty #HighSeas #RaceForRatification
