The following vision of the future is inspired by the Earth Charter, which expresses the concept of the Common Good and was developed in consultation with all peoples of the planet. We now live in a culture of tolerance, nonviolence, and peace. People and nations have learned to coexist in harmony and support mutual Understanding, solidarity and cooperation. The conflict resolution strategies adopted in recent decades and the joint efforts undertaken by the whole world to solve problems have yielded optimum results and today we live in a war and violence free global environment. As they became increasingly unnecessary, militarized security systems were reduced and their funds were invested in peacemaking efforts, mediation, harmonization and strategic cooperation with an emphasis on education for peace, cooperation for health, prevention and sustainability. All nuclear, biological, toxic and mass destruction weapons were renounced and the orbital space is now a global harmonious environment. This peaceful society was only possible thanks to the recognition that peace is not only the absence of war, but living a full life of harmonious relationships with ourselves, with people from different cultures and all forms of life, with the Earth and the larger Whole of which we are part. We live in a culture of peace and harmony that extends to all living beings not just human beings. The recent evolution that brought us this far will always be remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life, the persistent collective effort to secure the ecological integrity on the planet by creating the ideal conditions that ensured social and economic justice on a global level and by restoring a culture of peace and harmony throughout the world. All this is cause for us to celebrate life joyfully today – all of us together without any distinction or discrimination celebrating the precious gift of Life. Earth Charter International

The annual World Climate and Security Report of the International Military Council on Climate and Security has just been released. Together with colleagues from The Center for Climate and Security Planetary Security Initiative and IRIS - Institut de Relations Internationales et Stratégiques we HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies have been working on a report focused on military innovation that can support climate-proofing of NATO militaries. The chapter that Irina Patrahau and I worked on, titled “The evolving character of war: Leveraging technological innovation in a changing operational environment” takes the first steps toward an inclusive analysis of the future of warfare that integrates considerations of military decarbonization in the broader scope of technological, geopolitical, and security trends that affect military operations, including climate change. With special thanks to our contributors: Richard Nugee CB CVO CBE Laura Birkman Davis H. Ellison, Tom Draaijer and Miriam Sainato The report can be accessed below!
🌎🛡️ RELEASE: To address the #climate challenge, militaries will need to think fundamentally differently about how—and what—they buy. This encompasses procurement policy, process, and requirements that meet both mission and sustainability requirements. Military acquisition leaders should send this market signal to civilian and commercial energy researchers and catalyze clean energy research by committing to purchase the products that are developed. ➡ Explore the latest analysis & recommendations across 4 chapters in the 2024 IMCCS World Climate and Security Report: https://lnkd.in/gz2ygf4T Planetary Security Initiative HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies IRIS - Institut de Relations Internationales et Stratégiques #ClimateSecurity #WCSR2024

🌍 IIASA at #AGU24: fast-tracking climate tech! Scaling innovations like carbon removal is key to cutting emissions and building climate resilience but the pace of adoption varies across technologies. 📊 Here’s what our researchers and collaborators are sharing at AGU24 today: - Newer, smaller, and less resource-intensive technologies scale faster. - Democracies adopt technologies quicker, though it depends on the type. - Large, complex systems need stronger policy support to succeed. 📅 Join IIASA experts Elina Brutschin, Matthew GIDDEN and Jenna Greene and Greg Nemet from the University of Wisconsin-Madison 🕒 13:40 EST | Hall B-C (Poster Hall), Convention Center https://lnkd.in/d2JD8GaG American Geophysical Union

Happy #WorldOceanDay 🌊 Whoever we are, wherever we are, we all share something in common: the interconnected natural systems that maintain a stable, resilient planet – and keep us alive. ⬇️ From the ocean to our air, we must safeguard these #GlobalCommons for a #SafeAndJust future. With new research showing that the world’s oceans are facing a “triple threat” of extreme heating, a loss of oxygen and #acidification (Guardian: https://lnkd.in/dSXNWxAx) now it is more critical than ever before to become better guardians of the oceans we all share. 🌎 Learn more about our work: https://lnkd.in/d5cBZEs #WorldOceanDay2024 #Oceans #EarthSystemBoundaries #SustainableDevelopment #SDGs #GlobalGoals #OceanProtection
