Thomas Lübcke, Norbert Steigenberger, Hendrik Wilhelm, and Indre Maurer – an interdisciplinary research group from Germany and Sweden – have published a crucial study on collective sensemaking in extreme contexts like maritime SAR missions. This research dives into how rescue crews and refugees overcome cognitive disparities and emotional challenges such as fear and anxiety, to effectively coordinate during high-risk operations. Drawing from unique multi-perspective data collected during a mission in the Aegean Sea, the authors introduce a dynamic model of communication and teamwork that highlights the essential role of verbal, para-verbal, and non-verbal cues. The findings offer invaluable insights for SAR professionals facing high-stakes environments. The paper is a must-read for those in the SAR community to better understand the complexities and risks involved in extreme rescue operations. 📖 Read the full journal article here: https://bit.ly/3BClYEO #SearchAndRescue #Maritime #EmergencyResponse

For those English-language learners interested in international policymaking and migration, use this article to develop your subject-specific vocabulary and knowledge. In light of the climate crisis, migration within and between countries can be seen as a solution to localised impacts of climate change. Some regions will be impacted only in certain seasons, so the managed facilitation of seasonal migration flows could provide respite and stability to affected populations. This reconceptualisation could prove particularly useful in the future! #english #languages #internationalpolicy
Migration must be seen as a solution to achieve sustainable development and mitigate the challenges of human displacement. In the latest issue of Wilson Quarterly, IOM Director General Amy Pope brings this narrative forward, and the stronger communities it would lead to. https://www.iom.int/ZSv

🌍 Today, on 7th September, we observe the International Day of Police Cooperation, established by the United Nations. As SAFE-CITIES, a European project dedicated to enhancing the safety of public spaces, we recognise the vital role law enforcement plays in protecting our communities. Their tireless efforts ensure citizens feel safe in public spaces, and it's important we acknowledge and appreciate their hard work. 👮♀️👮♂️ Through our project, we support these efforts by helping to improve security across Europe. We also highlight the importance of international collaboration between police forces, as well as initiatives like European projects, which encourage knowledge sharing and joint solutions. 🤝 To all law enforcement officers, we wish you a peaceful service and the best working conditions as you continue to safeguard us all. 🙏 Your work is invaluable, and we stand with you in our shared mission for safer public spaces. #PublicSafety #PoliceCooperation #SAFECITIES European Research Executive Agency (REA) STAM S.r.l. 📚 A GCSP paper some Armenian and Azerbaijani experts, including myself, have been working on for several months is finally out. While acknowledging the ecological unity of South Caucasus, these experts emphasize the absence of structured and coordinated disaster response mechanisms, which can increase vulnerability and hamper effective crisis management, leading to avoidable loss of life, widespread suffering, and significant economic damage. While certain environmental challenges and natural disasters can span across the borders, they would definitely need more neighborly and regional efforts. The authors describe the current situation as Armenia and Azerbaijan run their separate bodies and do not conduct communication channels and may also face different problems (distrust, bureaucratic bottlenecks, language barriers). By referring to the international cases of cooperation during collective emergencies, such as earthquake diplomacy (Armenia-Türkiye, India-Pakistan) and the European Civil Protection Mechanism, the authors encourage the creation of the bilateral or regional (South Caucasus) mechanisms, including a joint information centre, common test protocols, cross-border teamwork, joint training and exercises (for relevant agencies such as rescue teams). I thank my co-authors Anar Ahmadov, Vasif Huseynov, Tatul Manaseryan, Arman Martirosyan, Niko Orell, who put their best knowledge and efforts for preparing the paper, and Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) who facilitated and published the end product. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e2gYNp5X
