"Of course, every club wants to win titles. It is much more important, however, that we continue to consistently follow a clear path to bring our club up bit by bit, also in terms of the economy and infrastructure." "We don't want to be a flash in the pan, we want to have such a solid foundation that we can regularly be in the group stage of a European competition." Excited to share some preliminary findings from my dissertation looking at Field Tilt in Womens Football with Sunderland AFC and Gino Elraee What is 'Field Tilt'? Field Tilt is possession in the final third quantified in touches and passes. For example, if Team A has 68 touches+passes in the final third, while Team B has 89 touches+passes in the final third - Team A would have 43% Field Tilt, while Team B would have 57% Does this actually mean anything or is it just another statistic? Through my research with Sunderland Womens, using their match day footage to collect data I can share some preliminary findings which may suggest FT is indicative of a team winning During the 2023/4 Barclay's Womens Championship season, Sunderland AFC won 12, drew 5 and lost 5. On average, when a match was won - Sunderland had 56% Field Tilt, and the opposition 44%. When a match was drawn - Sunderland had 49%, while the opposition had 51% When a match was lost - Sunderland had 49%, while the opposition had 51 Field Tilt These preliminary findings, excluding cup games, show that when Sunderland won, they had more possession in the final third - Field Tilt

Should you quit as the leader if you've failred to deliver on your primary objective? Gareth Southgate resigned as England's manager yesterday because he's failed to deliver a tournament win. The stats show that in an 80 year history of England football and of the 20 mangers in that time Southgate has had: - Third highest number of wins of any England manager - Fifth highest win % of any England manager - Third most played games - The most consistent performance in international tournaments with 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in 4/5 tournaments, the best since Alf Ramsey in the 60s and 70s with . But there was no big win. No trophy. No national holiday to celebrate the success. Is this a good example of needing to celebrate small wins even if there is no 'big win'? Has Gareth Southgate given up when he could be 6 inches from gold next time? Or has he made the most difficult, yet most important decision leaders need to take, to know when to go? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments #GarethSouthgate #Football #Leadership #Leadershipdevelopment #Euros2024

I couldn't help but be gripped watching England vs All Blacks on Saturday. Everything that is good about Rugby, with a nail-biting finish to boot. Great spectator sport, particularly if you are a neutral (not that many people are neutral when it comes to England!) But it got me thinking about the other type of sporting performance that really gets me going - that I love watching... I love watching utterly dominant teams. You know, like England in 2002/3 - when you just knew that the machine was going to start steam rollering over the opposition. When a team that beat Wales by over 50 points came off disappointed with their performance. I love watching a team that is so all-singing, all dancing that it's like a well oiled machine; it's tempo is better than the opposition. Perhaps it's because I loved that in the military - and if you aren't a well-oiled machine in combat, the results can be catastrophic. That's the kind of business I want to build and study too. Well oiled, awesome, dominant performances. Businesses that win (however they define that) within the rules they have been set. What do you think? #LeadershipDevelopment #HighPerformance #OrganisationalExcellence #BusinessStrategy #MissionLeadership
