The article below by Grace Gottlieb is a great overview of some of the latest trends and developments around metrics, evaluation and the UK REF. Worth a read!
Today's post by Grace Gottlieb on the HEPI blog thoughtfully connects recent developments and initiatives around research culture, research integrity and open science, highlighting the work of the UK Committee on Research Integrity as well as the UK Reproducibility Network (UKRN). The article also explores the implications of these developments for REF2029, especially regarding indicators for the People, Culture, and Environment component. The point around the need for mixed-method evaluation, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative evidence, is particularly encouraging, as it reflects a growing coherence across these initiatives. 🤝 We think there are lots of opportunities to have better collaborations across disciplines. Embedded researchers can play a valuable role in enhancing cross-disciplinary collaboration and bridging the gap between research and practice. The #implementation of embedded researchers in policy, public services, and commercial settings was the subject of a recent systematic evidence and gap map. Want to learn more? The Science System Advisory Group (SSAG) is now seeking submissions for phase one of its consultation process. Submissions are open until 11.59pm Friday 17 May 2024. The SSAG has been established by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to provide advice to the government on strengthening the science, innovation and technology system. In the first phase of consultation, the questions are broad and high-level to allow the SSAG to determine principles that will shape subsequent discussions and calls for future submissions. Group members will consider challenges and aspirations of the many components of the sector, and its structure, efficiency and effectiveness. A two-part report will be developed, with the first part delivered end of June, and the second end of October 2024. The first part will focus on determining principles for the sector moving ahead and providing preliminary advice and recommendations. The second will provide final recommendations and advice on longer-term changes to ensure the future success of the science system in New Zealand. To make a submission please visit ssag.org.nz/submit

I'm delighted to see the outcomes of this project with CWTS | Leiden University for cOALition S published today. How these findings are put into practice is for the cOAlition S funders to decide, but researchers told us that there is much in the existing system of scholarly communication that they value. Journal reputation continues to play a critical role in their decision-making, and they value editorial judgement highly. Yet there is also frustration with the slow speed of the publication process and growing recognition of the benefits of open access. On balance, researchers are supportive of increasing the use of preprints and (to a lesser degree) open peer review. Our work supports the case for reform of scientific publishing in some areas, but makes clear that change must be implemented in a considered, collaborative manner. Contributors highlighted the growing threats to research integrity from generative AI and publishing misconduct and the need for global collaboration to change recognition and reward mechanisms. I'd encourage anyone with an interest in scholarly communication to take some time to explore our findings, as they provide a wealth of insight into what the global research community thinks about publishing, peer review, recognition and reward. Check out the full outputs, including an interactive dashboard of the survey findings, here: https://lnkd.in/eJAygwyR #scholcomm #stmpublishing #openaccess
Research Consulting Limited and CWTS | Leiden University are proud to have supported cOAlition S in their consultation with the research community on the "Towards Responsible Publishing" (TRP) proposal. This collaboration has culminated in a final report as well as a range of underlying data, which are now available to download via Zenodo. You can access all project outputs via the dedicated Kudos page at: https://lnkd.in/eTthX9s7. Should you wish to explore the findings of the global researcher survey delivered as part of this project, do visit the interactive dashboard available via: https://lnkd.in/e-NQpTrb. Many thanks to all those who contributed their insights and participated in this important discussion - your input has been invaluable! We also extend our thanks to Stephen Pinfield, Joy Owango and Lin Zhang for their insights on the scholarly communication landscape and the potential implications of the TRP proposal on the global research landscape. #openscience #openresearch #scholarlycommunication #publishing

Glad to have been part of this initiative, even if only in its early stages, before maternity leave :) As we strive to broaden the types of research contributions recognized in research assessment, it is important to address each new type of research output or activity (such as research software), not only from a technical or disciplinary perspective, but also through dedicated policies that look at the bigger picture. I am thus excited to share this new #ScienceEurope publication offering recommendations for research funding and performing organizations to develop and align their policies on research software. #ResearchAssessment #ResearchSoftware #UEFISCDI #OpenScience
📢 New publication on #ResearchSoftware! Science Europe has just released recommendations for research funding and performing organisations to develop and align policies on research software. This paper provides good practices and other resources for each recommendation. The role of research software in scholarly communication is fast developing, driven by an active community of practice. These recommendations help sustain this progress by contributing to a more robust policy framework, alongside the leading work of the Research Data Alliance and Research Software Alliance. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/ec5Ruxtn. A big thank you to the Science Europe Task Force on Research Software: Zoé Ancion (ANR), Tommaso Boccali (INFN), Maria Cruz (NWO), Dr. Stefan Karcher (DFG), Matthias Katerbow (DFG), Carlos Martinez (Netherlands eScience Center), Daniel Perez (FWF), Andreea Popa (UEFISCDI), Katharina Rieck (FWF), and Ioana Spanache (UEFISCDI).
