Social policy in the European Union: state of play 2023 - The #European Union is shifting from Barrosian #neoliberalism to a new paradigm emphasizing #social rights, reflected in #policies like the Minimum Wage Directive and efforts to increase #corporate accountability. This 'social turn' aims to balance planet, people, and profit through #green industrial policies and enhanced #worker protections. However, the #sustainability of this shift faces #challenges from potential #austerity measures and a focus on competitiveness. https://lnkd.in/eaWHQY9Y

🚨 The 2024 Global Rights Index, recently published by the International Trade Union Confederation - ITUC, paints a global picture in which hard-won democratic rights and civil liberties of #workers are increasingly restricted. Key findings for 2024 include: ❗ Almost 9 out of 10 countries worldwide violated the right to strike, while about 8 in 10 countries denied workers the right to bargain collectively for better terms and conditions ❗ 49% of countries arbitrarily arrested or detained trade union members, up from 46% in 2023 ❗ More than 4 in 10 countries denied or constrained freedom of speech or assembly 💡 The ITUC Global Rights Index is a comprehensive review of workers’ rights in law ranking 151 countries against a list of 97 indicators derived from #ILO Conventions and jurisprudence. It rates countries on a scale from 1 to 5+ based on the degree of respect for workers’ rights. ➡ To know more, have a look at the Global Rights Index 2024 here: https://lnkd.in/euWnUTGK

We all know the rights in our own Bill of Rights but did you know that there are 30+ international human rights which may apply to your business and across your value chain ? have a read of our Day 3 BHR : Did You Know Campaign
The United Nations’ Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) provide that human rights impacts must be assessed and addressed with reference to internationally recognised human rights as a minimum baseline. The internationally recognised human rights are those enshrined in the key international and regional frameworks, namely: • the International Bill of Rights (comprising the UN Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights); • the International Labour Organisation’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work; and • the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. The are 30+ internationally recognised human rights which are categorised under: 1. Civil / political rights (such as the right to freedom, equality and dignity, or the right of access to an effective remedy); 2. Social / cultural rights (such as the right to freedom of opinion, expression and information, or the right to self-determination); 3. Labour rights (such as the right to just and favourable working conditions, or to freedom from slavery or forced labour (including child labour)); 4. Environmental rights (such as the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, or the right of access to clean water); and 5. Welfare rights (such as the right to life, liberty and security of the person, or the right to to property and freedom from forced evictions). New age challenges will see the recognition of additional basic human rights, such as the UN 2021 resolution which recognises the right of access to the internet to be a human right in and of itself, as well as an enabler for ensuring the full enjoyment of all human rights. For further information or tailored advice, please reach out to Webber Wentzel's key BHR contacts - Pooja Dela-Cron and Paula-Ann Novotny and visit our website - https://lnkd.in/dt_Znmej. #BusinessandHumanRights #BHR #HumanRightsMonth
