News Alert: Indonesia’s new health law extends the legal window for abortions in rape cases and medical emergencies from 6 to 14 weeks. Signed into law by President Joko Widodo this week, it addresses demands from women’s rights activists and healthcare practitioners who argued that the previous rule was too restrictive, leading to some women and girls being jailed for terminations beyond 6 weeks. The new regulation is part of broader efforts to improve reproductive health, including private funding for public hospitals, increasing the number of doctors and reducing tuition fees for medical students. The RCOG’s Making Abortion Safe programme has empowered over 3,000 healthcare professionals worldwide with essential knowledge on quality abortion care. From online training on post-abortion contraception and surgical procedures to the critical role of advocacy, this programme is transforming healthcare. A key component of this initiative is the support of over 50 SRHR champions—healthcare professionals from five African countries—who are leading the charge for increased access to safe abortion and post-abortion care. Their advocacy has already driven significant reforms in Nigeria, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe. This work is a powerful example of how education and advocacy can bring about meaningful change in global healthcare. Learn more about this programme in our impact report: https://brnw.ch/21wPrp3

Today, April 24th, beginning at 10am ET, the Supreme Court of the United States will hear oral arguments in Idaho v. United States and Moyle v. United States about whether states can deny pregnant people emergency care. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) is a longtime federal law guaranteeing everyone treatment for emergency medical conditions, nationwide. EMTALA has always protected pregnant people in medical emergencies and required stabilizing emergency abortion care. EMTALA contains no exceptions: hospitals must provide the treatment necessary to stabilize emergency medical conditions and, for some people, that means ending a pregnancy. But anti-abortion extremists want to single out and exclude pregnant people from this protection. They are using this case to make it easier to ban emergency abortion care nationwide. The Supreme Court has only one reasonable option in this case: uphold EMTALA and insist that states follow federal law that guarantees pregnant people get the emergency care they need, without interference from politicians. The public can listen to the arguments live or find transcripts here: https://lnkd.in/eaBwPrG #SCOTUS #abortion #EMTALA #healthcare

Abortion bans are interfering with doctors' ability to provide high-quality care to patients experiencing miscarriage. Preetha Nandi of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and colleagues describe the new landscape and offer advice: "Health care professionals and advocates can be involved in efforts to inform themselves of state policies, work within their own institutions to support evidence-based care and trainee education, participate in local and state initiatives to address the impacts of abortion legislation, and advise elected representatives with patient storytelling and data-driven solutions to promote equitable and safe miscarriage care." https://lnkd.in/enh78J_4

Distance affects use of telehealth to access abortion pills Research led by the UW School of Medicine shows that patients who live farther away from an abortion-services facility are more likely to rely on birth-control medications delivered through the mail. This research began at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, when receiving abortion medication through the mail was novel. Over the course of the study, many more patients opted to receive their pills through the mail. The research was conducted before the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which overturned the constitutional right to an abortion. https://lnkd.in/gR3ZkQ8G
