🌟 When I think back on the path that led me to where I am today, one constant stands out: my passion for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Long before stepping into my role as a Business Analyst, I was drawn to the intersection of social policy, health, and justice. This passion led me to pursue a Master’s in Development Studies, specializing in Social Policy—a decision driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to SRHR and gender equity. Throughout my career, my commitment to SRHR has remained strong. Even while advancing in business analytics, I have been engaged in SRHR-focused projects, constantly seeking ways to deepen my understanding and impact. Today, this passion drives me toward a new endeavour: a PhD proposal on femicides in Kenya. As reports of gender-based violence and femicides increase, I feel a strong sense of urgency to explore the root causes behind this disturbing trend, seeking ways to advocate for meaningful change. Recently, I shared my reflections on how accessible SRHR education can impact population growth and sustainable development in an article published by DevelopmentAid. I’m thrilled to see this work reach a broader audience because I believe that understanding the role of SRHR is critical to building a healthier, more equitable future for all. You can read the article here: https://lnkd.in/ekujt-EB. My journey is far from over, and I welcome anyone with similar interests to connect as we continue these vital conversations together. 🌍✨ #SRHR #GenderEquality #SustainableDevelopment #PhDResearch #Femicides #SocialPolicy

ODISHA EMBRACES GENDER INCLUSIVITY BY RECRUITING WOMEN AS AGNI YODHA FIREFIGHTERS In a landmark decision, the Odisha government has announced plans to recruit women as firefighters, marking a significant step toward gender equality in traditionally male-dominated fields. The position will be renamed to "Fire Fighter" or "Agni Yodha," symbolizing strength, courage, and the vital role women will play in emergency response teams. This move aims to empower women and provide them with opportunities to serve their communities while ensuring a more diverse and inclusive firefighting force. With this change, Odisha joins a growing list of states across India working to break barriers and encourage women to take on more challenging and important roles in public service. The initiative is expected to inspire other regions to follow suit in recruiting women for similar high-risk jobs. #MYBhubaneswar - Share and stay updated. #Firefighters #AgniYodha #WomenEmpowerment #Odisha #GenderEquality

Work is supposed to be a place of growth and opportunity. But for many women, it’s a place of fear. First, let’s ask ourselves: Is my workplace safe for women? Are there policies in place to prevent harassment, and more importantly, are they enforced? Having a policy on paper means nothing if there’s no real action behind it. And remember, creating a safe workplace isn’t just a job for HR—it’s a responsibility we all share. #internationaldayfortheeliminationofviolenceagainstwomen #violenceagainstwomen #violenceagainstwomenandgirls #women #womenwelfare #GBV #UN #UnitedNations #UNWomen #SDGs #Advocacy #Ngos #changemakers #womenincanada #womeninafrica #womeninnigeria #nigeriansincanada #UNiTE #16DaysOfActivism #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #NoExcuse #ZeeInspires #Zeeimpacts #Episode7 #zeeimpacts #VOZ #MentalHealthMatters #mentalhealth #womenforwomen #SafeWorkplaces

Do you know what contributes to the gender gap? Women are less likely to apply to jobs they do not meet 100% of the qualifications vs men at 60%. My advice... You got to be in it to win it! Don't let your fear of failure, perfectionism, imposter syndrome get in the way of applying to a job. Start applying to the jobs that you are not a 100% fit Good luck! #consultnetworx #careeradvice #jobadvice #jobsearch #gendergap

Recently, a friend shared his concerns about his pregnant wife, who had completed a virtual recruitment process and secured a job. However, her start date coincided with her expected delivery date. When I inquired whether her pregnancy was disclosed during the hiring process, he mentioned that it wasn’t due to fears of being overlooked for the position. This situation highlights a significant issue: job hunting is particularly challenging for pregnant women. Pregnant women often face considerable bias during job searches, which can include: Hiring Discrimination: Employers may consciously or unconsciously avoid hiring pregnant women or those anticipated to become pregnant soon, due to worries about maternity leave, reduced productivity, or perceived lack of commitment. Workplace Accommodations: Pregnant women also encounter difficulties related to needing special accommodations, such as flexible hours or adjusted duties, which can impact hiring decisions or job security. Wage and Job Security Issues: Pregnant women also experience wage disparities or concerns about job stability due to biased hiring practices or fears about their future availability. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has taken steps to address these issues through various conventions and recommendations aimed at promoting gender equality and safeguarding the rights of pregnant workers. Key initiatives include: Maternity Protection Convention (No. 183): This convention sets forth guidelines to ensure maternity leave and benefits are provided, aiming to mitigate negative impacts on women’s employment opportunities and job security. Promoting Gender Equality: The ILO advocates for gender equality in the workplace, supporting policies that prevent discrimination and assist working mothers, including during recruitment. Policy Guidance: The ILO offers guidance and support to countries in developing policies that tackle pregnancy-related discrimination and ensure fair treatment of pregnant workers. However, despite these international efforts, challenges persist, and their effectiveness often relies on national implementation and enforcement. Ongoing advocacy and awareness are essential to overcoming these bias faced by pregnant women in the job market. I also came across a very interesting Act "The pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) of 1978" which is however a United States federal statute. It will really be great if the National Assembly of Nigeria can look into promulgating similar laws and ensure enforceability to break such bias. Sonia O. Felix

Figure out what you need to do to be the Heroine of your own story
Founded in 2002 by Jameela Nishat, Shaheen Women’s Resource and Welfare Association is a beacon of hope for marginalised women in Old Hyderabad. The organisation has been at the forefront of providing essential support services to victims of domestic violence, child marriage, and other social injustices. Jameela’s journey to founding Shaheen was inspired by her own experiences growing up in a society that imposed limitations on women. Despite coming from a progressive family, she faced societal pressures to conform to traditional gender roles. “While I was encouraged to study, I was sent to a regular government school while the boys in the family were sent to convents,” she says. A turning point came when Jameela witnessed her young cousins being forced into marriages with older men. “This troubled me. None of them said anything against this practice," she adds. "Therefore, when I got the chance to work for women from distressed and weaker sections of society, I jumped at it.” And so was born 'Shaheen'. But the organisation’s work has not been without its challenges. As Jameela explains, “Women have been conditioned to believe that they will be hit, they are weaker, and they need a man to look after them.” The organisation faced resistance from both men and women who were reluctant to embrace its mission. “Women would come up and tell me, ‘woh mard hi kya jo aurat ko na mare’ (what kind of man doesn’t hit a woman every once in a while?).” Jameela says it has taken an eternity to challenge these deeply ingrained beliefs. What started in Old Hyderabad’s Sultan Shaheed area has today, with the help of 19 volunteers, spread its wings to 25 slums, with five dedicated centres for women to call home. Gender Attitudes Shape Perceptions of Women’s Economic Empowerment in Tanzania A study conducted in Mwanza, Tanzania explores the differing perceptions of maternal employment among parents of young children. Mothers generally view employment positively, while fathers express resistance and fear of diminished power. Men often fear that maternal employment leads to marital conflicts and adverse child outcomes. The study highlights the need to address gender norms and involve men in women's empowerment initiatives to promote positive parenting practices and equitable sharing of child-rearing responsibilities. Addressing gender attitudes can support women's economic empowerment and benefit both mothers and fathers. It's so important for women to be well equipped for the World of Work. There will always be challenges along the way, but sharing knowledge and supporting each other are key. Empowering working mums is just one part of the journey. This post by Women in Data summarises some of the challenges women might face in their career as a parent. How can we better support them? How can we better support ourselves? #workingparents #femaleempowerment #genderparity #womenatwork
77% of mothers say they have had a negative or possibly discriminatory experience at work during their pregnancy, maternity leave, and/or on their return to work* “Events such as the Women in Data® event are essential in giving women spaces where they can gather and have conversations about specific challenges they’re encountering and support each other to progress.” says Joeli Brearley, CEO of Pregnant Then Screwed “We have seen changes within organisations where women are enabled to have groups where they can be honest with each other and know it’s a safe space.” 🤰54,000 women a year lose their jobs due to pregnancy or maternity.* “We don’t want pool tables and free beer, We want childcare policies, We want proper parental leave policies, We want to see no gender pay gap, and We want to see women that are already in senior positions working with that organisation.” “I think it’s key that these companies ask women what they want, what they need and then go and do it." Joeli also emphasises the importance for employers in implementing gender-neutral language in job adverts.💻 Zurich Insurance became the first company in the UK to advertise all vacancies with the option of part-time, full-time, job share, or flexible working. Coupled with the use of gender-neutral language, This led to a 16% rise in women applying for jobs. 💬 Share in the comments how employers can better support, retain and attract working mothers ⬇️ _ 📰Read more about Joeli Brearley, as she joins The emPOWERED Network to discuss pregnancy discrimination in the workplace | Capacity Media ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e5i38KtH If you have been made redundant post maternity, click here for a few TIPS on things to consider when dealing with your employer➡️ https://lnkd.in/exfQMDDq Learn more about your rights, GOV.UK: https://lnkd.in/eM32yi6 _ *Equality and Human Rights Commission: https://lnkd.in/eqvX35rc 📸 Flynn Duggan #MaternityLeave #Maternity #Paternity #PregnantThenScrewed #MotherhoodPenalty #GenderPayGap #GenderParity #GenderEquality #WorkingMom #WorkingParents #Female #FemaleEmpowerment #Empowerment #EmpowerHer #WomenInData #DataConference #DataEvent
