👋 Dear NGI-er: The "NGI - The Next Generation Internet" initiative projects announced their decision to discontinue the use of X social media platform, effective immediately. This strategic move aligns with NGI’s commitment to fostering an Internet that embodies European values of trust, security, and inclusion. The NGI initiative, launched by the European Commission, aims to shape the development of the Internet into an “Internet of Humans” that responds to people’s fundamental needs and reflects the values and norms enjoyed in Europe. Recent evaluations have raised concerns about X’s alignment with these principles, particularly regarding data privacy, user autonomy, and the spread of misinformation. In response, NGI projects have chosen to redirect their focus toward platforms and communication channels that prioritize user-centric design, transparency, and ethical standards. NGI projects will continue to engage with their communities through channels that uphold these values, such as Mastodon and Peertube both powered by the open standard for decentralised social networking ActivityPub, ensuring stakeholders remain informed and actively involved in shaping a more human-centric Internet. 🌐 What key #InternetGovernance issues must be addressed ahead of #WSIS+20? Christopher Martin, Head of Policy Innovation, North America, spoke at this week’s ICANN event on the WSIS+20 and Internet Governance in Washington, DC. He joined an insightful panel session on "Future proofing the IGF: Business Community perspectives" with Timea Suto, Jacquelynn Ruff, and Jim Prendergast. The panel addressed the various opportunities and challenges facing businesses as they engage in initiatives like the Internet Governance Forum (#IGF), which businesses can leverage to shape #policy, learn from other experts, and engage with other stakeholders, including governments. At the same time, businesses face significant internal pressure to demonstrate ROI from these engagements. The discussion raised many issues to act on in advance of next year’s 20-year review of the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS+20), which will shape Internet governance and the future of the IGF itself.

With Commissioners yet to begin their work, ECIS would like to provide valuable insights into the evolving digital landscape, and more specifically on the key issues of interoperability, competition, and innovation, which will shape EU policy in the coming years.
