An IEP (Individualized Education Plan) is essentially a contract between the school and the parents about what's going to happen during the school year and how all parties involved are best going to support the needs of the child. As a BCBA if you're called in to support the IEP process, your goal should be to help the child be the most successful in the least restrictive environment. Find our full podcast on the BCBA's role in the IEP and get our data collection methods cheat sheet here: https://lnkd.in/e7R8gsHT.

I posted an article a few weeks ago that reflected on the social-emotional benefits of reading. Here's an installment of the Ten Percent Happier podcast that complements that discussion with a conversation about the social-emotional benefits of writing. It doesn't take too many steps from this conversation to see the public health and pro-social benefits available to all by working to increase access to the tool of writing, and increasing its role in our all our lives. https://lnkd.in/de3HzDWB

Our kids are not reading - not for leisure, not for classes, not with family members, not for learning and comprehension. We have lessened the importance and significance of reading entire books in K-12 and the result is that students are not able to process or concentrate on longer tests. Now consider students who had the experience of a teacher librarian in their school, who instructed them in critical reading skills, competing with students who did not have that essential educational benefit who will compete for the same jobs, the same college entrance requirements, and the same benefits as citizens in our country and within the State of California. This continues to be an EQUITY ISSUE for our K-12 students. Having a well-trained, credentialed librarian should not be a luxury or contingent on your zip code. Check out "College students in 2024 are less willing and able to read full books." Reading has turned Today, Explained asks whether that matters. This episode was produced by Peter Balonon-Rosen, edited by Amina Al-Sadi, fact-checked by Laura Bullard, engineered by Andrea Kristinsdottir and Patrick Boyd, and hosted by Sean Rameswaram. https://lnkd.in/g-GfjPV6

“Your image of the child, regardless of whether it is the first time you have reflected upon it, defines and determines the way you approach every interaction you have with children,” writes Ron Grady in his book Honoring the Moment in Young Children’s Lives: Observation, Documentation, and Reflection. Ron joins Heather in this episode to dig deep into a phrase (“image of the child”) that is becoming more and more common in our field. What does it really mean? Why does it matter so much? https://lnkd.in/gxRb_i7W
