Charging of Drilled Holes in Water-Logged Areas in Open Pit Mines Open pit mining is a widely used method for extracting minerals and resources from the earth. However, one of the significant challenges faced in this type of mining is the presence of water-logged areas. These regions can complicate the drilling and blasting processes, making it essential to adopt effective strategies for charging drilled holes to ensure safety and efficiency. Water-logged areas in open pit mines can arise due to various factors, including groundwater seepage, rainfall, and the proximity of water bodies. The presence of water can lead to several complications during the drilling and blasting phases. For instance, water can affect the stability of the drilled holes, potentially leading to blowouts or misfires. Additionally, the presence of water can dilute explosives, reducing their effectiveness and posing safety risks. To address the challenges posed by water-logged areas, specialized drilling and blasting techniques on the designed pattern are often employed. One common method is the use of water-resistant drilling equipment, which can operate effectively in wet conditions. Once the drilling is complete, the next step is to charge the holes with explosives. In water-logged areas, it is crucial to use water-resistant explosives, such as water-gel or emulsified explosives, which are specifically formulated to retain their effectiveness in wet conditions with additional use of sleeves and coller keepers. These explosives are designed to resist water absorption, ensuring that they maintain their detonation properties even when submerged. Before charging, it is essential to assess the water level in the drilled holes (dipping of holes with a tape) . If the water level is too high, it may be necessary to pump out excess water to create a dry environment for charging or the use of sleeves that are of same length and hole diameter. This step is critical, as water can significantly reduce the energy output of the explosives, leading to ineffective blasting and potential safety hazards. Open Pit mining interface doing a pit expansion while at the same time mining the original faces comes with its own challenges. On the safety front, it requires operations to be proactive starting from planning. The planned mining faces (Polygons) must be well arranged, prioritized and they must have safety precautions instructions. In this intervention the best weapon to use is COMMUNICATION. Strong and effective communication tools must be established and enforced. The Shift Bosses for both the upper benches and lower benches must have a physical meeting so that there must be firm risk assessment actions taken. The Log Book must be a supporting tool (Note legal requirements of Log Books), which is written to affirm the observations done by both Shift Bosses. In most cases operations at the bottom benches are at the receiving end and very much exposed to hazardous incidents. a simple task like site preparation at the top benches has a high likelihood of dropping boulders to the lower benches. Activities like drilling, blast holes charging and dozing are at times done close to the high wall and if communication is lacking, boulders from upper benches will land onto equipment or personnel at the lower benches. Pit interface requires properly crafted procedures in order to prevent unwanted events. Parking of equipment during blasting times sometimes puts them in harms way resulting in property damages. Blast timing must also be done such that it reduces fly-rock throw towards the bottom faces, but the material along the higher free face will roll down. The spillage from the high faces has a tendency is closing access roads. The share for today is: Avoid accidents by ensuring that all personnel have been briefed, Communication is done regularly, Observe and take corrective action, be proactive rather than reactive.

Dependable dewatering pumps   Becker Mining has recently delivered 28 Unipumps to a Platinum mine in the Steelpoort area that are being used for underground haulage dewatering.   This contract, for the supply of 28 VS100-37 kW Unipumps, was delivered in three weeks - ahead of the required delivery date. These robust vertical spindle pumps - locally manufactured at Becker Mining’s Welkom operations to stringent quality specifications - have been developed for optimum efficiency, low maintenance and extended service life in harsh operating conditions.   “Becker Mining’s Unipumps durable pumps, which ensure highly efficient dewatering mine haulages, are designed to handle dirty water containing large abrasive solids and fibrous materials, that many pumps are unable to cope with,” states Rick Jacobs, Senior General Manager (SGM) for Consumables, Becker Mining South Africa. “Notable features include extreme dry run capabilities, abrasion resistance and a Spigot aligned design that requires no gaskets. These pumps have an easily adjustable impeller and pre-assembled bearing cartridges.”   “An important advantage of Becker’s pump design is that spares are interchangeable. This reduces inventory management costs and simplifies on-site repairs. Because all components are locally manufactured, these pumps are readily available and a large stock holding of spares and raw materials ensures swift delivery throughout the country.”   The Unipump is available in three sizes - 50 mm, 80 mm and 100 mm. Each model has unique performance features and a combination of various motor speeds. Different impeller diameters give a mid-point pumping range of 160 m3/hr and total heads up to 70 m. Because these pumps do not have a mechanical seal or packing gland, they can run dry indefinitely. Heads to 20 m at 40 m3/h can be achieved at speeds from 1450 rpm and heads to 60 m at 100 m3/h can be achieved at 3000 rpm. Open vein impeller pumps handle solids up to 12 mm in diameter and slurries up to 1.5 S.G. Lower bearing lubrication is via a standard external grease nipple.   Unipumps do not have any external moving parts, which enhances safe installation. what did you understand by BCM and its application. BCM stands for Bank Cubic Meter, a unit of volume measurement used in mining and earthmoving industries. It refers to the volume of material in its natural state before it is excavated or blasted. Key Aspects of BCM: 1. Definition: One Bank Cubic Meter (BCM) is the volume of material (soil, rock, etc.) in its undisturbed, natural state before any mining or excavation activities have taken place. This contrasts with Loose Cubic Meter (LCM) or Compacted Cubic Meter (CCM), which refer to material after excavation or after compaction, respectively. 2. Applications: BCM is commonly used to estimate the volume of material to be removed during excavation, drilling, blasting, and other mining or construction activities. It helps in calculating how much volume needs to be processed and the equipment required to handle it. 3. Volume Changes: Once material is excavated, it expands (called swell), meaning that 1 BCM becomes more than 1 cubic meter of loose material. The swell factor varies depending on the type of material and its properties. LCM (Loose Cubic Meter) is the expanded volume of material after excavation. CCM (Compacted Cubic Meter) is the volume after compaction. 4. Conversion Factors: The conversion from BCM to LCM or CCM depends on the material's swell and compaction factors, which are typically determined through testing. For instance, soil or rock that swells by 30% after excavation would mean 1 BCM equals 1.3 LCM. 5. Importance: BCM is crucial in mine planning, estimating the amount of overburden to be removed, determining blasting volumes, and calculating equipment and material handling capacities. BCM provides a standardized measurement to help plan and optimize the excavation and handling processes in mining and earthworks.

In fact, winches are powerful machines often used in mining industry which designed to facilitate the movement of heavy loads in mining operations,both above and below ground through vertical shafts.
