When someone needs help with basic needs, they will take offered help, but we often wonder why they don't connect with us, a church, a community, beyond that basic help. Often it doesn't feel safe to make those connections. Did you take interest in them and their family beyond hearing about their need? Did they feel judged about their living arrangement? Did they feel like they put you in jeopardy when visiting due to safety concerns in their neighborhood? Do they know they will need to go to three churches on a Sunday morning to get enough to meet their needs, but the church requires they stay for service to receive help? Did they ask a question that wasn't "appropriate"? Can they trust you?
