MedTech Innovator is the largest and highest-performing accelerator of medical technology in the world and the medtech industry’s premiere showcase and competition for innovative medical devices, digital health, and diagnostic companies. 95% of their companies are still in business or have been acquired, raising 30% of the global private funding invested in Medtech last year. The 1st stage is an online application. Afterwards, they run the Medtech Innovator Road Tour where 200 out of 1,400 applicants are invited to participate in one of a series of pitch events. This investment aligns with NEC X's goal to support healthcare innovation and coincides with GPx's entry into the Elev X! Boost program. This program offers startups like GPx a combination of funding, strategic partnerships, and integration with NEC X's tech ecosystem to facilitate global growth. Coming off the MedTech Mission to Israel, I’ll be highlighting several aspects of the depth of the Israeli MedTech ecosystem in the coming days. To explore #MedTech companies in #Israel, our delegation was hosted by Rapid Medical (Michal Eran-Shriki & Mor Hochberg) in the tech hub of Yokneam, Israel to learn about their neurovascular devices that have treated thousands of patients in the US, Europe and beyond. Their retriever solution, based on novel and patented braiding techniques, was designed to treat medium and small vessels, the next frontier in revascularization, in addition to large vessels. While many Israeli medical device companies shift operations to the United States as they approach commercialization, Rapid Medical has uniquely maintained its manufacturing in Israel having built a facility that can produce tens of thousands of units annually. Being located near #Haifa and Israel’s Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, they have ample access to engineers, technicians and assemblers locally. But Rapid Medical is not the only one! According to Startup Nation Central, there are 7,200 startups and tech companies in Israel in a country of only 8 million people, making them #1 in startups per capita. Among those startups are 650 medical devices companies of all stages, sizes and shapes. In contrast to the US, there are more MedTech companies in Israel than biotech/pharma (450 in Israel). Why are Israelis so entrepreneurial? StartUp Nation has studied this and identified six qualities of Israeli innovators: 1)    Challenge formal hierarchies 2)    Not afraid to fail 3)    Committed to delivering outcomes 4)    Join forces to support each other 5)    Driven by urgency 6)    Irrepressible confidence and optimism for the future Despite the ongoing war, Rapid Medical has not missed a single shipment, product development milestone or deadline. In fact, sales are ahead of their forecasts. We heard the message of the startups loud and clear: Israeli MedTech companies are open for business (and were never closed). Like Covid or the financing downturn of 2022-23, the war is yet another event that has challenged the resolve of the people and community, and they have demonstrated they can do more with less. Day 2 of Octane's Medical Innovation Forum kicked off strong with an engaging panel that brought together top MedTech executives to share their insights on the future of healthcare technology. Moderated by Jim Mazzo, Executive Chairman of Neurotech Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Co-Founder of Octane, the discussion set the tone for an inspiring day of innovation and strategic vision. Christine Heyninck-Jantz from Edwards Lifesciences emphasized the role of AI in cardiovascular advancements, highlighting a shift towards multi-modal data and wearable sensors to personalize patient care. She noted that AI’s applications could extend across various medical fields, driving innovation from research labs directly to clinical settings. Doug Faunce, PhD, of AbbVie Ventures, and Biren Mehta from Johnson & Johnson also shared insights on effective partnerships, underscoring that a strong partnership relies on early communication and alignment of goals. Both executives highlighted the complexities of partnership dynamics, with Mehta likening it to a “dance” where clarity and shared vision are essential. Addressing challenges in MedTech collaborations, the panelists discussed how large firms manage partnerships with smaller startups. Doug Faunce emphasized the importance of recognizing external innovation and supporting it with AbbVie’s resources, while remaining transparent about goals and potential conflicts. Christine Heyninck-Jantz shared similar views, particularly on maintaining quality standards when acquiring smaller companies with unique cultures. The panel also tackled regulatory challenges, with Faunce mentioning his board-level involvement to keep startups aligned with evolving regulatory standards. Today Innovation Norway and DNB were proud to present the selected companies for the new Healthcare Innovation Accelerator program at the DNB Nordic Healthcare Conference in Oslo. With a collaboration between the Mayo Clinic Innovation Exchange, Destination Medical Center (DMC) and the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York, Innovation Norway and DNB // Back Bay are proud to arrange this accelerator. A lot of companies applied for the accelerator program and 8 up-and-coming and U.S. ready companies were selected.
