Excited to kick off the activities of the Interreg Euro-MED Programme mission on Sustainable Tourism #NaTour4CChange project yesterday !🌿 The new project aims to enhance sustainability and fortify the resilience of coastal #Mediterranean #tourism destinations against #climatechange. This will be achieved by revamping local #governance in tourism through innovative ecosystem-based approaches, and by recognising nature as not just a tourist attraction but a vital solution for destinations' resilience. 🤝 The project brings together the expertise of 10 partners from 6 Mediterranean countries and collaborates with 18 associated organisations. IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation is taking the lead on Pilot Destination Resilience with two key objectives: ➡ Strengthening climate change-related resilience in tourism destinations through #NaturebasedSolutions ➡ Instigating a shift in the behaviour of residents and tourism operators through Destination Climate Action Plans and #NbS Institut za turizam, Plan Bleu, Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR), Consejería de Turismo, Cultura y Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía, Regione Autonoma della Sardegna, Natura-Jadera, REGION OF CRETE, HSPN - Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water management of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton Emmi Lindqvist

Top sustainable tourism concerns include protecting natural resources, controlling tourist numbers, monitoring satisfaction, and implementing early warning measures. A case study in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula illustrates the tension between wildlife exploitation and responsible ecotourism. A tour group visited a farm with chained jaguars, sparking discomfort over their treatment as tourist attractions. This highlights the need for enforced rules and regulations to promote appropriate behavior, ensuring the well-being of wildlife and the long-term productivity of natural resources. Effective management and enforcement of sustainable tourism practices are crucial to preserving natural resources, respecting wildlife, and promoting responsible ecotourism. By prioritizing protection, control, and monitoring, we can mitigate the negative impacts of tourism and ensure a thriving ecosystem for future generations. #wwfpakistan #responsibletourism

We are regularly told that wildlife tourism is meant for people with disposable incomes and that only rich entrepreneurs who set up resorts benefit at the cost of forest edge villagers. But Protected Areas can be wealth creators like the Taj Mahal and any other man-made structures.

Historical/cultural tourism predominates in Armenia, but ecotourism is catching on as well. The Vayots Dzor region has several assets for encouraging tourism in the region, including natural wonders, historical and cultural heritage, biodiversity, and agri-food production. The main goal of the project AREVADZOR was to enhance the performance of SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in the ecotourism and renewable energy sectors through the promotion of sustainable practices, innovative technologies, and effective collaboration between local institutions and CSOs. East Greenland is like no other place on Earth. Its enormous glaciers, deep fjords and rugged terrain has kept it relatively isolated from the rest of the country—and from the world. Its remoteness also means it’s sparsely populated, with only about 16 per cent of Greenland’s population living there. over time, tourism is being viewed as a way to bolster the economy and provide residents with much-needed jobs. The big question: How to expand East Greenland’s tourism industry without harming the pristine environment that makes the region special? #greenland #ecotourism #naturalheritage #cconservation #destinationmanagement Jula Maegaard-Hoffmann Pasi Rautio Eeva Karjalainen Jonathan Karkut, PhD Sarah Cox Mogens A. Advantages of Ecotourism over Traditional Tourism: 1. Preservation of Nature and Biodiversity Ecotourism is aimed at minimizing the impact on the environment. This includes more responsible use of natural resources, reducing pollution, and supporting nature reserves and parks. In Spain, with its unique natural areas such as the Pyrenees, Canary Islands, and Sierra Nevada, this is particularly important. 2. Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Traditions Ecotourism not only preserves natural resources but also supports local cultures and traditions. Ecologically-minded tourists seek to immerse themselves in local culture, supporting local producers and artisans. This allows small communities to maintain their way of life and traditions, which are often diluted in mass tourism, making it monotonous and dull. 3. Sustainable Development of Local Communities Ecotourism brings income directly to local communities, helping to create jobs and improve the quality of life in rural and remote areas. In Spain, where many regions suffer from depopulation and economic difficulties, ecotourism can be used to support and revive these territories. 4. Raising Environmental Awareness Ecotourism promotes environmental awareness among both tourists and the local population. It teaches people to value nature and recognize their responsibility for preserving it for future generations. to be continued.... Let’s work together for a sustainable Mediterranean! 🌊✨ Our new report provides crucial recommendations for mitigating tourism pressures and protecting our marine ecosystems. Key recommendations emerging from the report: 🔹 We need more detailed information on local tourism activities to overcome data gaps 🔹 Limited data in non-EU countries affects pressure assessments 🔹 Increasing protected areas and establishing effective management measures in non-EU regions is needed 🔹 Implement Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) to balance environmental, economic, and social goals 🔹 Adopt best practices like improved anchoring techniques, eco-mooring systems, and better tourism management strategies 🔹 Support Mediterranean networks and conservation programs focused on species and habitat protection #bluetourism #Mediterranean https://lnkd.in/dv2EnDqr IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation ETC-UMA Blue Tourism Initiative eco-union IDDRI

Our #GreenAwards - seeks to promote and recognize #EcoTourism practices in Africa. Ecotourism is entirely a new approach in tourism. #Ecotourism is a preserving travel to natural areas to appreciate the cultural and natural history of the #environment, taking care not to disturb the integrity of the #ecosystem, while creating #economic opportunities that make conservation and protection of #natural resources advantageous to the local people. In short, ecotourism can be categorized as a tourism programme that is - "Nature based, Ecologically #sustainable, Where education and interpretation is a major constituent and Where local people are benefited." #Tourism #Ecology #Sustainability
