I found this MasterClass on The Art of Negotiation so interesting and had to share it. It could also be titled the art of small talk and connecting with others. What is so interesting is not the tactics used, but why they're so effective. Labeling, mirroring, voice control, personalization. I'll bet many of you use these from time to time and don't even realize it. These are all things we should be doing day in and day out if we're being active listeners and good communicators. https://lnkd.in/emSzGpaU

Just completed 'The Art of Negotiation' course by Chris Voss and I highly recommend it if you're looking to understand the theory behind negotiation. The course is based on real-life happenings from hostage negotiation and offers insights into techniques such as mirroring and labeling. While it may not provide enough practical application for business, it is still an interesting and informative course to take. #NegotiationTechniques #ChrisVoss #TheArtofNegotiation Thanks Tea Pavlek for the suggestion. If anyone has completed the course and would like to have a role-play session, just PM me.

Chris Voss's book, “Never Split the Difference," has become a cornerstone in the field of negotiation, offering unique insights drawn from Voss's extensive experience as an FBI hostage negotiator. Here's a detailed look at its relevance in modern-day negotiations: Key Concepts and Techniques 1. Tactical Empathy - Voss emphasizes the importance of understanding and acknowledging the emotions of the other party. This technique helps build rapport and trust, making it easier to influence their decisions¹. 2. Mirroring - This involves repeating the last few words or the critical part of what the other person has said. It encourages them to elaborate and feel heard, which can be crucial in negotiations¹. 3. Labeling - By identifying and verbalizing the other party's emotions, you can diffuse negative feelings and reinforce positive ones. This technique helps in managing the emotional dynamics of the negotiation¹. 4. Accusation Audit - Voss suggests preemptively addressing any potential accusations or negative perceptions the other party might have. This can disarm them and create a more open dialogue¹. 5. The "That's Right" Moment - The goal is to get the other party to say "That's right," indicating they feel understood and validated. This moment can be a turning point in the negotiation¹. Practical Applications 1. Business Negotiations - Voss's techniques are highly applicable in corporate settings, from salary negotiations to mergers and acquisitions. Understanding the emotional undercurrents can lead to more favorable outcomes². 2. Personal Relationships - The principles of empathy and active listening are just as relevant in personal interactions. Whether negotiating household responsibilities or resolving conflicts, these techniques can improve communication and understanding². 3. Everyday Interactions - Even in day-to-day scenarios, such as negotiating a better price or resolving a customer service issue, Voss's methods can be effective. They help in creating a collaborative rather than adversarial atmosphere². Relevance in Modern-Day Negotiations In today's fast-paced and often impersonal world, the ability to connect on a human level is invaluable. Voss's approach, which prioritizes empathy and understanding over brute logic, is particularly relevant. It aligns with the growing emphasis on emotional intelligence in both personal and professional spheres³. Moreover, the rise of remote work and virtual meetings has made effective communication more challenging. Voss's techniques, which focus on clear and empathetic communication, can bridge the gap created by physical distance³. Conclusion "Never Split the Difference" offers timeless strategies that are adaptable to various negotiation contexts. By focusing on the human element, Voss provides tools that are not only effective but also foster better relationships and outcomes. #chrissvoss #neversplithedifference #negotiation
