At Target ALS, fairness and transparency are at the core of our review process. The Independent Review Committee (IRC), composed of leading experts from academia and industry, makes all funding decisions independently. This ensures that every research application is evaluated fairly, free from any organizational bias or conflicts of interest. No IRC member can apply for or receive Target ALS funding for their own work, and there are no preset limits on the number of grants awarded each cycle, allowing the best research to receive support. IMRA Stories from the Field: 2019 Recipient Benjamin Steinberg, MD, PhD, FRCPC With a village of mentors and collaborators behind him and the support of The Scientist Track Investigator program at The Hospital for Sick Children, Benjamin Steinberg, MD, PhD, FRCPC was awarded the 2019 IARS Mentored Research Award for his research, “The Role of Pyroptosis in Neuropathic Pain.” The award helped to build a robust and successful research career in basic science for Dr. Steinberg, specifically focused on the science that most intrigued him - cellular and molecular mechanisms of pain. His initial science sought to implicate some of the key molecules and pathways, specifically a molecule called gasdermin D, and delineate how those pathways feed into the inflammatory burden of pain. However, along the way, they discovered something surprising, a male-female difference or a sexual dimorphism for this immune modulator. Today, that initial discovery has grown wings, creating several big questions leading to intriguing scientific outcomes. Dr. Steinberg and his team continue to work diligently to corroborate their initial findings and then phenotype them.
